I have tried the 17 HMR - it was OK, but I am going with the .22 mag next time. The .17 didn't fair all that well with even a slight breeze.

Use the .22 Mag if you want to eat him.
.17 Hummer if you want Red Mist.

Your question is asking which is better and I would have to go with the .17 HMR as far as accuracy, because of the flat trajectory of the .17 caliber boat-tail bullet it shoots. If you intend to shoot and bring to the table rabbits and squirrels, then I consider both the .17 HMR and the .22 caliber Magnum too much gun for these animals.A .17 HMR is entirely too devastating(rib cage shots) for a 1 1/4 to 2 pound squirrel and the .22 mag probably not much better,in my opinion.

Generally, yes. The .17 HMR rifles tend towards heavier barrels. Guys also like to put Hubbles (bigger scopes) on them, running up the cost of the Weapon System.
The venerable .22WMR rifle is made in far more variations - light sporter barrels to heavier varmint barrels, more choice of stock woods and synthetics, etc.
.22WMR ammo is also available in more types, allowing you to tailor the load to the game better. It makes a more versatile gun.

That's why I have three .22WMR rifles and only one in .17HMR.

22 mag or 17?

22 mag no contest! I thought i had the ultimate varmint rifle with the 17 but not enough range or powder for my needs. My all time favorite is still the 243 with a 55gr. bullet. exploding range of 250 yrds.

if u want a really good squirral, whistle pig gun go with the .17 but hit them in the head the carnage is sweet with the bellistic tips or hollow points but for longer range for yotes and whistle pigs the mag works better.
