Winchester "94" Trapper Question

Seriously considering buying a 30-30 Trapper with sn. 6011XXXX, I believe manufactured around 1991. I remember hearing or reading about some problems with the barrels and the brass getting blackened in Trappers made in the 1990's. Any insight would help.

I'll do a little research to try and find out just to try and help you out. If I don't reply, I haven't found anything out. In that case, Sorry. But I suppose if you're that worried about it don't by the trapper. Plenty of other model 94s out there.

Where is the one your considering buying, if you have one in mind? At a local dealer or on the internet? Also, if it is on the net, put a link in your reply.

i don't think it was manufactured in 1991 with that serial #. i just bought a model 94AE just about a month ago and the serial # on it is also in the 6es. I'm guessing mine was somewhere near the last run. That one also. The website where you can check the serial # and get a date stops only covers from 1-5103249. Have no clue why if they go beyond that #.

The trapper was for sale locally and sold before I got to see it. I will be going to my cabin near the Allegheny Nat. Forest today and am told a dealer in Warren Pa may have one. I'll check it out. Recently bought a pre 64 "94" on the internet and just finished sprucing it up.
The right side of the receiver had been splashed with deer blood a long time ago and not cleaned properly, it ate into the blueing and pitted the metal. Alot of polishing with 600 and 1000 emery cloth got out the pitting and then reblued with oxphro creme (10 coats applied with steel wool) got it looking great. It's used for whitetail hunting and now it also looks good. I am an old bolt action user but I like the feel of a Winchester. The search continues.

Are you positive the S.N. is 6011XXXX? Or...is that one too many digits?

I have a Winchester 94 Trapper in .45 Long Colt #5427XXX... and am experiencing the same issue with the brass becoming "blackened". Does anyone know why this is and what it is?

Is it from not sealing the powder and gas properly? under loaded shells do this because the don't swell and seal but if these are factory loads maybe something is oversized?

Even full power loads (not just cowboy stuff) do the same. There is very little recoil (if any) with the .45 long colt round... from the cowboy stuff up to and including Speer GoldDot. I am pretty sure this is normal for this gun/caliber combination... but the powder on the casings leaves the question of "why" ? Maybe a chronograph is the best idea to determine if there is a pressure loss due to an "oversized" barrel chamber? This is my only Winchester and I have nothing to compare it to in terms of what to expect from a lever gun.

Sorry about that, The serial # had one too many digits. The dealer near Warren Pa didn't have a used trapper for sale as reported.
While at the cabin had a chance to shoot the Marlin 1894c 357 mag I recently acquired. It was accurate at 50 yds with a Williams peep but much louder than I expected. The search continues for a decent hunting trapper in 30-30, a good excuse to vists local gunshops and it gets me out of the house before cabin fever sets in.

Try gunbroker.com. Do your search Winchester Trapper 30-30. Trust me, you'll get a lot to pop up. Good luck.

My understanding now, is that the original .45LC was actually .452 ... whereas the newer .45LC is actually .451... thus causing burnt powder around the casing while in the chamber.

I also believe there is something to be said about necked (rifle) cartridges sealing in a chamber for Winchesters vs. handgun calibers.

Someone who knows more on this, please fill in the blanks?
