A little history of the gun's manufacture: It was made from 1958-1989 by Savage Arms. Savage was their top of the line guns. Stevens was their middle grade, while Springfield was their lowest priced line. In my opinion their was no difference in the metal quality, but the Stevens and Springfields were not as well finished and the wood was not up to par with the Savage.

It is a working man's gun, not a beauty contestant. There were some quality problems with these guns and they did not sell as well as the doubles made by Savage under the Fox, Stevens, and Springfield names.

Some of the Savage line of guns started off with the A model and got as far as the H model. Yours is an H model and that gives me indication that it was made toward their last run of this model.
