A new mod 85 ?

Was looking at a new model 85SS2UL last weekend. I really like the compact gun overall, but I have large hands and the grip on this gun is soo small. would the larger grips off of the Tracker series work on the mod 85 frame? Also, has anyone had any bad luck with their Taurus revolver? I want a titanium .357 mag, but he does not have one in at the moment. It has, what appears in the picture, to be the same grips on it as a tracker. ( Model 617SH2C) Taurus International Manufacturing Inc

most everyone i have talked with that own taurus 85's have been well plesed with them

Any idea as to how accurate they are? I know, for a CCW, shot at 7-10 yards it really does not matter. But it matters to me.

To answer the grip question, check out Taurus' website, they sell a larger rubber combat grip for their small frame revolvers. And, Hogue has both rubber and various wood grips that look bigger than the factory boot grips.

To answer your question about Taurus revolvers in general, I can tell you that I currently own 3 Taurus revolvers. I had a fourth, a model 608 snubby, but I sold it only because it had the mirror stainless finish and was DAO. I just did not like the finish nor a DAO revolver, but it was a great gun otherwise. My current Model 94 Ultra-Lite 9 .22 snubby is an awesome little gun. I also have a Tracker 44 Mag. I did not like the factory "Ribber" grips at all. I replaced them with Hogue rubber grips. My newest Taurus is a Model 851 Protector Ultra-Lite. I just bought it on gunbroker and haven't received it yet, but I can't wait for it. I too was checking out the various Model 85s, but I opted for the SSUL version of the 851 because of the shrouded hammer that allows SA/DA and it also has a windage adjustable rear sight...a feature that I think will be invaluable for me (I just like adjustable sights better than fixed so I can make it shoot exactly where I aim, although the aforementioned 608 had fixed sights that were spot on, but I've had other fixed sighted guns that were slightly off). Anyway, I own and buy Taurus revolvers because they are excellent quality, fit & finish, and are priced right. I also own/have owned Rugers and have shot S&Ws. They are great guns too. I don't view my Taurus revolvers as being second-class, they are quality guns. I think if you like it, buy it.

Concerning Taurus revolvers, I love them. I own 3 now but owned a 4th. All of them are great revolvers with absolutely no issues. (Well except I hated the factory "Ribber" grips that came on my 44 mag Tracker, so I replaced them with Hogue rubber grips that I absolutely love.)

I too was looking at the 85SSUL, but I ended up buying an 851SSUL (on Sunday on gunbroker, so I don't have it yet, but can't wait to get it). I chose this over the 85SSUL because it has the shrouded hammer that still allows SA/DA and it has a windage adjustable rear sight. I have had fixed sighted guns that were slightly off and I can't stand that (a Ruger SP101 that I still have). I want the gun to shoot where I aim. (My Taurus I sold was fixed sighted, but actually shot spot on, I just didn't like the mirror stainless finish it had and it was DAO which I've come to very much dislike in a revolver.)

Anyway, I own and buy Taurus guns because they are quality guns at prices that Ruger and Smith can't even compete with. I own Rugers and have shot a couple Smiths, and I really can't say they are/were any better than my Taurus guns.

You got it right on with the 617! That was the second gun i ever bought. I've been carrying it for at least 9 yrs. It's only draw back is its a knuckle buster on your middle finger when alot of 357's are sent down range. One problem after about 200 rounds was that the cylinder locked up. Could not pull trigger or hammer back. DAMN you say? To that I say "LIFE TIME WARRANTY"!!! Got it back crisp and clean 2 weeks later. Have never had a problem with it since. At least 5000 rounds threw it now. Again this is my daily carry piece and I strap an 85 on the ankle as a J.I.C. As a final note I have never felt under gunned with a 7 shot 357 on my hip as some guys will say 7rnds thats it? I've got 13 in mine. Good luck!
