Customize Mauser.........Or Not?

I talked my mom into buying me a Mauser K98 for Christmas. Should I try to Customize it? If so, how would I go about doing that.

theres a couple of ways to go about it. bubba it, not recommended. or do it correctly, parts and tools will get expensive- cheaper to buy a nice factory rifle.

If it's original and the condition is good or better I wouldn't. They aren't making any new 98k's these days. Again, depending on condition it's worth more in original condition.

Just clean and then shoot it for a while, this will give you some learning time. Decide what if any changes you would like to make and then hunt for parts and info on what you want.
Take your time, cheaper and easier to do it right the first time.

I recommend not customizing

If it is in original condition as it would have appeared in WW2 then do nothing as it will
grow in value over the years.

Thumbs down

IF your 98k is in reaonably good shape and all original - Leave it alone!
If you have to have a "sporter" go buy one!

Lefty O what a great looking Mauser !!! WOW Do you use it ? I noticed the bolt handle did you have it changed or did you buy the gun already customizied.

I've got a 1909 Mauser I hope to customize some day and seeing that one makes me want to get started.
Nice Rifle...A.H

I agree with the above. By "customizing" your Mauser you loose value. These rifles are built to take harsh conditions and are very accurate.

If you want a sporter version I have found mauser K98 sporters for a couple hundred. Bubba modified yes but with a lot of potential to upgrade.

Shoot your rifle and enjoy. Keep it clean and safe and enjoy it for years to come.

This is absolutely correct. As is if you are even close to being a hunter, that Mauser will bring game home.Start looking parts up to do a decent sporterizing(not even custom)job and you will find the prices very high at the least. And after you have all the money invested, you will find the value of a sporterised Mauser is very low.I have customised Mausers and wrapped big money up in them but if I had to sell them,I would find it difficult to get much more than a decent factory mfg rifle would cost. And there is a lot you must do just to sporterise an old military rifle. sam.

If you want a hot shot modern scoped long range
rifle go to walmart and spend $250 and dont
waste dozens of hours and hundreds of dollars
spending money that you could never get
back as you will be destroying the collectable value
of an original rifle that shoots powerfully and accurately enough for hunting deer to 100 yards
and maybe a little more with iron sights.

When gun season closes put a bayonet on
it and go throw it like a spear during archery
season. Try that with a super scoped 600 yard
shooter !

Nah, really, clean it up and buy a box or two
of the cheap mil surp ammo to sight in and
and see if you can hit anything with it.
Then buy one more box of good stuff to hunt with.
