let's debate

given the perfect load in the case and perfect conditions. What would be the maximum effective range of the m-1 carbine.

Define effective. Bullet travel would be over a mile, max. accurate 500 yds.

Being a Master Debator ...I say since it is a pistol cartridge so Basically 150 yards maximum effective sporting range and accuracy...75-100 yards for plinking.

I will have to go reference my ballistics software. Perfect conditions where a wet or dry environment, effective against game (4 legged or 2 legged, paper), the projectile.?

What the hell did I do to you?? No shootin' the Paper..

These thoughts about the gun when through my head last week, for about a day before I sealed the envelope and sent it to CMP for a Rack Grade Inland.. (yeah, I'm cheap)..

I finally just said that I don't have one.. I'll shoot a box of shells through it, clean it, and put it away, and pull it out after watching the next movie I see with a Carbine being used in it.. Then I'll shoot a box of shells through it, clean it and put it away again..

Too big for small game.. Too small for anything else.. On the other hand, I don't have one. (yet)

not fiddin to one right now. After my birthday i might, or get a hand gun. I'm not sure right now but if i do get a carbine its going to be my target rifle optimized for range of over 250 yards accurately every time.
then i can hit this guy with out trying

have you looked at the ballistic charts for the .30 carbine round. (round figures) more muzzle energy than a 357 mag @ 100 yards so how is that not big enough to bring a deer or other large game down. Are you sure about that. try this site Ballistics Charts

I wouldn't deer hunt with a .357 Mag, either.. Where I hunt, most shots are 100 yards minimum, and I'd never consider that with a .357.

I deer hunt with a .243 or a 25-06, but I might give the nod to my 6.5 Swede this week..

Personal preference is all.. If I wanted to shoot them and then chase them, I'd use a bow.

Again, since this is "Let's Debate", please look at the following links as far as ballistics..

Here's UMC ballistics on the .30 Carbine..
UMC Centerfire Ballistics

Here's Winchester 100gr Power Point ballistics.
http://www.sportsmansguide.com/resou...istics_20.html

The .243 is considered small for deer hunting, yet is making almost as much energy at 200 yards as the Carbine is at the muzzle..

If I was shooting deer at less than 50 yards or less, I guess I could consider the Carbine, but in reality, most anything else is a better choice..

Feel free to use what you want, but I shoot to kill (and then eat) and I'm shooting something many find at the minimum for deer as it is.. Also remember that in my area a 120 lb. doe is almost small..

I've got a safe full of deer hunting weapons, but when my Inland arrives from CMP, it won't be used for deer hunting..

Max effective range of the 110 gr FMJ military ammo is 300 yds. Would that be lethal; depends on where the hit is. Remington ballistics show 262 ft/lbs at 300 yds with a velocity of 1035 ft/sec. It has a -48.6 in bullet drop at 300 yds when sighted in at 100 yds. Personally, a 200 yds shot/hit would be about the best to hope for a killing shot for a varmint sized critter.

Max Accurate range would be about 150 meters. That is if you meant the M1 Carbine. It is a Close Range Weapon and maybe if you have a good rifle, with a good rifled barrel and some good loads for the rifle, you may stretch it to 200 meters, but I would say at 200 you would be doing EXCELLENT if you had it benched and could deliver a better than 8 inch group.

Personal feeling

Well, from my point of view and based on shooting one earlier in my life, I just don't think it has much value beyond 50 yards. However, this is a forum and you will get other opinions.

Thanks Wingwiper - I'm glad we see it in much the same light. It is a classy and classic little gun with a little cartridge. It has a place in history. But anyway you cut it, it is a bullet without much power.

I would agree with you, I own two carbines and have done fairly well at 100 meters with them. After that I don't expect much. I would say that 50 meters is probably very accurate with about 70% of the carbine users. 25% could probably stretch it to 100 meters and the remaining 5% could go beyond. It would be based on usage and practice and I don't do either with it, I merely plink with them and haven't touched either one in several years, I usaully shoot stray cats, coons or coyotes in the yard with them.

Rich

Since you are a master debator, I'm sure you have documented support for your assertion.

Since the M1 Carbine, a 110 grain round nose bullet, at 1900 fps, will have the muzzle energy between a .357 magnum and a .44 magnum, I see no reason to specify a spoting range, without specifying the game.

Coyote at 150 yards ... if you can see them at 150, go ahead and shoot them. Deer I'd pass at 150 yards. Inside a 100 yards for a deer ... more like inside the 75 yard range for my old eyes.

See the reload calculators at handloads.com for the ballistic data.

I think it is a sick little cartridge that isnt worth much good for anything, too expensive and inaccurate for plinking and too low powered for game. And as for someone asking Mooseman to document anything,I believe it is well documented and most of that is negative. It was designed to take the place of the 1911 pistol in cases where some personel couldnt learn how to shoot.I guess it filled that void but not by much.I do believe if that is your kind of shooting and you enjoy it you should have one but for myself, someone that can hunt and shoot I have no use for one and feel that discussing one is as big of a waste as shooting one. sam.

My father carried a Garand for over three years. I asked him about the carbine. He said "They only ones that had carbines were sissies and sailors." I guess that means he didn't like them.

30 carbine was developed to replace the 1911 in guncrews and such for a better hit ratio than sidearms. It worked for what it was intended.

Yawn The 1911 part at least has some truth to it, but with all due respect the rest is pretty much BS. Did it have it's limitations? Of course. It was not designed to be a sniper rifle or a deer gun. But at 100 yds with a choice between a .45 and a carbine. I'd grab the carbine ....at least first

I guess not. I WOULD guess most the folks, including the airborne, tank and mortar crews that carried them into battle might take exception to that statement though. As would my father if he was still alive.
