help!

I got some new grips for my high standard 1911. While removing the old grips one of the screws unthreaded the piece that screws into the frame behind the grip. SO I have fourth screw and it's female counter part still attached to my grip. How do I break those apart without damaging either thread?

It seems to me I held one with sidecuts and turned the screw out. sam.

that's kinda what I was figurin. But I'm kinda scared to damage the thread. guess if I do I'll just have to go to my smith and get some new screws ect..

"The piece that screws into the frame behind the grip" is called a grip screw bushing. They are not expensive, nor are grip screws. So don't worry if you screw one up.

The thing to be very careful about is re-installing the bushing in the frame. Don't cross-thread it, and use a proper sized screwdriver. If you are not careful, you can damage the very fine threads in the frame. Then it's gunsmith time for sure. Most smiths have a tool made specially for re-installing the bushings.
