yeah i got a low powerd leopold scope and the rings you can still use your iron sites with seem to work well so far.

Have you really thought this out???

I shoot 405grainers from my marlin 45-70ss. I can shoot it all day long. It is a well balanced gun and recoil is not at all what i expected. Although I don't use it for anything other than plinking and bear protection. I should really get rid of mine.

That's an old wive's tale that just ain't so.
It was actually talking about cast loads, not jacketed. Even so, it's an old false rumor.
In any case, both my microgroove barreled rifles (.41 Mag and 45-70) have good accuracy with wheelweight gaschecked bullets keeping velocities at about 1400fps. Gotta harden the lead for anything faster than about 1500fps or so.
Bullets need to be .002 oversized.

gaschhecked lead can be pushed a tad over 2000fps microgroved or not with vary good accuracy.

I guess I was just lucky, I got a perfect condition ported barrel 45-70 for $150 and a 444 in perfect condition for $250.

RD... Congratulations on your two purchases! I too would have snatched both of those rifles up quickly, for the price and condition you noted. Is the 45-70 the Marlin 1895G? Maybe you'll be able to share pics of the two?

I have one with the ported barrel (DISCONTINUED) and put the bear proof ejector and good triger form brownells in it. Put a Leupold 1 1/2 X 5 on it. great rig, lots of field of view.

I recently bought a new 1895 in the ltandard barrel length & blue steel .

I put a Burris Fullfield II 3 x 9 on it . Only shot it once so far , but I think I am going to like the scope . And the scope comes with a life time warrenty . :-)

Recoil is just a function of how much powder you pour into the case . And how heavy a bullet you put on top of the powder .

I will bet that there is a higher percentage of .45-70 shooters that reload , than almost any other caliber . Lever gun caliber , anyway ?

According to the Lyman book , you can load .45-70 to within about 500 fps of a .458 Win Mag , in a Marlin . A little hotter in a Ruger single shot .

You may disagree but Marlin didnt.They went back to standard riflings on high power,s. sam.

0.002" oversized? What would that make the diameter of your selected bullets, .460"? If so how much resizing of the neck do you need to do with the brass?

I dont think he is wrong on this.If you have a .451/.452 bore,with cast you would normally use.452/.454 dia.bullet. sam.

Congrats on the rifle KR. That sounds like a good price. I have a 444xlr and love it. It's my primary whitetail rifle. My dad has a matching 45-70marlin xlr. The reason we bought ours is because a local outdoors supply warehouse burnt down and they had the hornady leverloution bullets for both calibers for 10.00 a box. We both bought a couple cases but should have bought much more.

yeah stuff cost $$$$ i got 200 rounds so i doubt ill ever kill that many deers with it .

Sam,
45-70s use a .458 bullet.
45 Colt and 45 ACP plus 454s use .451 ans 452 bullets. Some older Colts use .454.

I didn't know that. That is good info. I don't reload for either caliber yet though.

I don't know why, but i want one of these rifles as well. Not really needed in my part of the country.
