Silencer for a 22? Ridiculous!! I live in the woods, with a few scattered neighbors. IF you shoot just ONE time, it's next to impossible for someone to locate you. More than once, a different story. But get good enough to kill what you are aiming at, on the first shot, and you won't need a silencer. Nuff said

I took a 9mm luger form a thug once, he welded a lawn mower muffler on the barrel. it was ugly as sin and impossible to conceal but our test showed it did silence the weapon so he got close to 20yrs for possing a firearm'he was a felon' and possing a silincer without the proper paper work along with the string of robberys he commited with the ugly @$$ gun.

It's easy enough to get the license...or just join the CIA.

This must be one of the few times when Guns & British come together, cos we can get silencers nae problems at all for any calibre; even original or modern De-lisle type fully silenced weapons.

I'm with Billy on this one. CCI CB, quiet enough to shoo in the city limits. A little louder than a pellet gun. They don't work the slide on my 10/22 though. Easy enough to make work.

If it's for survival, wouldn't that mean you are out on your own? Why then would you need a silencer? No one around to hear the shot, just you.

Rambo,

My original idea was to have a quiet gun that would not attract attention.

The trouble with survival is you don't know who else might be in the area or how close they are.

I'm beginning to think a fishin' pole might be the ultimate survival weapon.

RWS subsonic hollowpoint .22 LR is designed to be pretty quite. When I shoot it out of my CZ 452, the bullet impact into the bullet trap makes more noise than the discharge of the rifle.

Even a silencer can't silence the bullet impact. .22s aren't too bad, but larger calibers make some noise.

Would have to echo someone's opinion above of using subsonic ammo -- and I definately give a nod on the CCI CB Long's. They're -very- quiet. We use them indoors on bullseye shoots, and the sound from the bullet hit on the trap is twice as loud as the report upon firing.

For additional quiet, try cutting an X in the end of a baby-bottle nipple and slip it over the barrel.... although accuracy is sacrificed. Saw my grandpa kill a couple squirrels about 45 years ago using a nipple -- and would imagine it'd still be just as quiet (providing the ammo was subsonic). He always used Remington .22 shorts standard vels in those days.

I have heard the nipple of a baby bottle works. My father in law told me that. Then he gave me this really funny look......
