Winchester M1 ???

I bought a M1 when I was 10 years old for 35.00. It says on the reciever that it is Winchester. I took it apart to see just what I have, 42 years later. All there is on the barrel is a "p" with no circle. There is a "3" on the flat top bolt. The serial number does not fall into the Winchester production time frame. It is 560xxxx. There is some kind of triangle on the front band, no bayonet clip. The sight says R1A. The stock has SCP in the sling well. Any clues what I have here besides, what I would like to think is a good investment??

Winchester did make them in that ser# range. A decent Winchester is worth 25 times what you paid. You need a good book on the M1 Carbine to see just what parts are original, and what parts may have been switched.Craig Riesch's M1 Carbine is a good book to order.

I have a Winchester where as the Stock is stamped Winchester and all serial numbers match. It has a flip rear sight. I paid $275 for it back in about 1978 or 79

Yes

You very likely do have a good gun for long term investment, if for nothing else, it has Winchester stamped on it! I would carefully clean and consider professional restoration if needed.
For the price you spend way back when all I can say is congratulations on your gun.

Winchesters were assigned serial numbers 5549922 to 5834618 so it is Real Winchester !
Good Investment you made...Somebody like Jimb2 will tell you about the other stampings...

Thanks everyone. All the information I found was online. So it looks like I am going book shopping. I didn't mention that the rear sight was a 100/300 flip. We are off to a military arms only shoot in May. It will be the first time I have shot this gun in about 25 years. Any trapdoor buffs out there? I have 2 of them, one is 95% and is unrestored with a bayonet.

I worked with Norm Brown. I know a lot of the guys you listed. We used to live near Winston Churchill when I was a kid. Covered the western side of the state. I got my carbine from Durham's gun shop in Poultney.

I have 2 trapdsoor carbines. One is in original condition, a Custer era 18,XXX. The other is a 'cutdown' from a long rifle made in 1890.

Mine are put up for now as we are trying to sell our house. But same here one is a beauty and the other was a cutoff. I have put regular rifle sights on the cutoff and crowned the barrel as it was a hack saw job. But both rifles shoot nice.

Wingwiper! You have a very nice early spring tube Winchester! Dated barrels are scarce too. You've got a grear collectable there. WRA/GHD on the stock, not GHH....
Srssr, isn't that an SC-B in the sling bevel? The stock was made by Sprague and Carlton for IBM. And I suspect the marking on the front band is a PI in a pennant. Look close and see if I'm right. There should ba an intertwined WP in an oval on the barrel. It is probably under the barrel band. That is the Winchester proof mark. It will be there unless you have a replacement barrel. Although I think M14man has overestimated its value, I do have to agree that you investment is worth a lot more than you paid...perhaps 15-18 times what you originally pain (~$600-$650) It is an arsenal rebuild, but still is a collectable carbine.

Thanks, It probably is GHD, the stamp wasn't complete on the last letter so I couldn't be certain.
Nice to know it a good one, that rarely happens with me, I usally have the garbage.

I can take pictures, but do not have a website to host it. Tell me how and I will comply and post a pic.

Hi Jim, It was great to have a chance to meet you and chat FTF at OGCA. You've certainly helped me and many others on the various carbine forums with your sage advice and I very much appreciate it. No, the White Bag didn't sell and neither did anything else on our table with a price tag over $300. All of my sidekick's junk guns flew OTD on Saturday but anything worth something went home with us. I guess everyone's Christmas bills must have come home to roost.

WW, please email me your pictures if you can't find a way to make 'em work and I'll try to post them for you.
