I have hunted for years with a 25/06 and have decided to pull out the 270 WSM and make it my deer rifle for next year. I was woundering what everyones feelings are. |

I think it is a great little cartridge.I doubt that you will notice much difference in the two. They are both great deer cartridges. The biggest advantage being the heavier bullets in the .270. sam.

The only problem I have ever had with the 270 was there was not many bullets to pick from. But everyone tells me that there is a good selection now. I've have always been a fan of the lighter bullets. For instance I have always used a 100 grain speer in my 25 because I liked the speed and exspantion of the bullet. I never have like when a bullet just passes through the deer.

| It is your decision
It is your decision. I feel fairly certain you have checked out the ballistics. In all honesty, I cannot see the point to the new short case cartridges other than having a gimmick to sell. I would not trade a proven .25-06 for one of them but we are all different and if this is right for you then you should do it without regard to what others may suggest.

| 270 WSM
I have both 25-06 and a 7WSM. The 7wsm shoots as well as the 25-06 if not better. It reaches out there and touches them. Would not trade either one.

I will never get rid of my Custom Mauser 98, 25/06 because I know how it performs. But I do like to try other calibers. I don't know what will happen with the 270 WSM after I get it to the range. It's at the gunsmiths now being glassed and having the headspace checked. The rifle is a Win. Model 70 Featherweight SS. I have always been a person that does not like to down one caliber over the other, because every caliber has a home and is loved by someone. I will carry my 25/06 the first day and if I kill my buck I will carry the 270 WSM the rest of the season. Thanks for the imput, I love talking about rifles. I've been shooting collecting, and reloading for about 30 years. It's alway's good to get other peoples views.

great cartridge. ive got 2 rifles chambered for it, 1 is a winchester and couldnt be happier with it. fast and accurate. the 25-06 may be good as some others mentioned, but the 270WSM has capabilities the 25-06 cant touch.

Do you load your own or use factory ammo. If you do load your own, what deer load do you use in the Winchester?

my deer rifle, i am currently shooting federal 130gr power-shok. very accurate for me, first group ever fired from my rifle was .33" at 100yds. my varmint rifle 270WSM, i reload 90, 100, and 110gr bullets for it, and i headshoot prarie dogs at 450-500yds with relative ease.

You have made my day. I just hope I can get as good of results my first time out. I picked up my gun from my gunsmith yesterday. He said he lapped the lugs and floated the barrel glassed the action. He said limits were really good and it should be a shooter. Today I will pick up a box of Winchester 130 GR. and head to the range if it's not to cold. Your guns sound very Impressive. How well does the 130 Power-shock do on deer?

dont honestly know the drop at 500yds, my varmint rifle is zero'd at 450yds so i just hold right on top of their little heads. for varmints, ive got a nightforce 8-32X BR with the NP-R2 reticle. the power-shok seems to work well, ive shot 6 deer with this rifle/ammo and none have gone far. personally i would reload and use hornady SST's, but i found this ammo for $13 a box a few years ago and stocked up on it. |

I think I'll start with some Real cheep ammo and one box of Winchester 130 Ballistic silvertips just to break it in and see how it groups Factory ammo. Then I will go back to old reliable and reload 100 or 117gr. Speer Hot core. I just got back from the Pawn shop were I picked up a 270 Win. for my son. It"s a used Winchester 70 Classic Stainless with synthetic stock. Seems pretty nice. The barrel was really dirty. But he's in the airforce and won't be home for a while. so I'll work on mine first.
