.22lr is a caliber. It is a small round and has little recoil. A great thing for a beginner to learn on. There are plenty of 22's out there to be had for as little or as much money as you want to spend. About how much is your budget?

About 1200-2200? that is a pretty big range. What exactly is your purpose for wanting a rifle? Plinking and target shooting? Hunting? Whatcha lookin for boss?

Don't know what Plinking is but, My friends go hunting and they want me to come along, so hunting and target shooting. I set the range like that because I never brought a gun, and don't know much about them yet

With your budget,a good training school.Go to the NRA website.They will tell where you can take classes.After the classes,type of firearm and general knowledge will be yours.after training you should have plenty left over to choose the right tools. sam.

I agree with Sam. A good class will cost a couple hundred bucks, and after that, you will be answering questions for your friends. You can never have too much knowledge when it comes to firearms.

With a budget like that, you should consider buying 2 rifles, one rifle for small game, and one rifle for big game.

Most states are requiring Hunter Education programs for new hunters to pass in order to hunt...That would be a good start.
With that much money, you should be able to buy 2-3 guns.
1. A bolt action .22LR Rifle.
2. A nice bolt action Deer Rifle....270, .308, 30/06
3. An inexpensive 12 ga shotgun, Single shot or pump.

You will have most all the bases covered with this selection of guns.Remember 1 thing...SAFETY FIRST.
You can not recall a bullet once fired !

Well, while I would suggest a .22 caliber and/or
a 20 gauge for a newbie your must realize these are types of ammunition. There are many good quality guns out there in a variety of price ranges.

One suggestion would be to do some serious reading about various guns, calibers, and hunting game. Then your questions will become more specific. Also, you might want to observe various guns being fired at shooting ranges to give you a sense of recoil, muzzle blast, etc. It is also a great opportunity to speak to the owners of various types and calibers of guns. I would not advise going hunting until you purchase a gun to match the game, practice with it, and become proficient.

You also need to be careful that you NOT spit shine any BAD habits. You want to learn to shoot with the noise and the recoil so you can train yourself not to flinch and jerk etc You need to be comfortable with KICK and NOISE if you are ever going to be a good shooter. When I was on the Range I use to call it ROCK and ROLL. I use to find the rythm of the ROCKnROLL and then settle in and shoot.
You will never find anything more pleasureable than shooting and being able to hit the V amongst 100 other shooters..

I agree with the other posts take a course which is usually sponsored by local gun clubs, might even consider joining a club.First rifle I would go with the 22Lr.by joining a club you will probably be exposed to several different types of shooting sports,meet like minded people who you can learn from and then determine what firearm best meets your needs. can't go wrong with a 22Lr,308 rifle and a 12 gauge shot gun.

22 LR is by far the best choice. I would also take the hunters ed course as this has a great deal of good information for bigginer hunters. I would also suggest that you take the course before sinking money into any rifles. If you end up not wnating to hunt, or you learn exactly what you are going to be using your rifles for you can then select the exact caliber that suits your needs.

I too am looking to buy my first rifle and I really enjoyed the kick of the 30/06.
Would you have any recommendations on what to look for when checking out the inventory? Should I be asking the shop keeper any questions about the rifle?

Right now I feel a little awkward walking in the used gun shop looking at rifles and not knowing what to look for. Do I just buy one and learn from a mistake?
