Best bet might be to get a copy of the Gun Trader's Guide, available in WallyMart. It will break down the different models better than other gun value books, and generally tells the differences, ie. the model having peep sights, or walnut stock vs. birch, etc.
A few obvious trends on suffixes:
Marlin - 'DL' is the deluxe model with peep sights, 'M' is generally the .22 magnum variant.
Mossberg - 'K' is the basic model, 'M' has Mannlicher stock.
Savage/Stevens/Springfield - 'P' denotes the peep sighted models.

There is also a short description in Blue Book of Gun Values.

As an update: Savage has a breakdown of their rifle "codes" (suffixes) on their website. Their is also a book out there (not theirs) with the history and discussion of models.

The Book is "Savage & Stevens Arms: A Collectors History" by Jay Kimmel.
You can get it Gunbroker.com auctions or at gunshows. Probably the best source of info on vintage Savage/Stevens. Still IMO disappointingly so.. Basically a collection of old ads. But does have most basic model descriptions. If you're a Savage/Stevens collector, it's probably worth the money.

Well, was looking along the lines of "what differentiates the M110 and M111"?

Swede,
Contact Joe DeGrande at Savage Arms (jdegrande@savagearms.com). He can most likely tell you. He is the director of customer services at Savage.
