| Senior Member | Really need more information; what type of forest, is it a day hike or will I be there indefinitely? Which season? Give as much information as you can. Let's answer it anyways. Magnesium fire starter Kukri Full canteen kit, I'm counting the steel cup as part of the canteen. Last edited by mos19k; 01-26-2008 at 09:48 PM. |

| Registered User | Canada? Schedule Rental car w/GPS Credit Card I'd be working. Wouldn't stay but a day or two. Probably stay at the Embassy, rent an SUV and find some local pub for supper. If I needed anything else, I'd go to Wal-Mart. Showpare, out |

| Senior Member | Assuming I could carry small items like fire-starting stuff and .22 shells in my pockets of my survival jacket, I would take these three. Survival knife. .22 rifle or pistol Lightweight nylon tarp for weather protection. Makes me think about stocking a waterproof jacket with all kinds of survival trinkets. |

The way my Grab & Go bag is set up, the items on top are a hunting vest with the pockets loaded with things like a fishing kit, magnesium firestarter, waterproof matches, a small folding knife, a bag of tinder, a compass, two tightly folded kitchen garbage bags, a space blanket and Pelton's survival manual. I should probably add a tin of survival food tablets to that, and maybe a spool of fishing line. The problem is to add stuff to the pockets while stil being able to fold the vest to fit on top of everything else. The next thing down is my survival belt and suspenders with my M1896 modified Swedish Mauser bayonet survival knife, two canteens (one of which will be filled with survival food tablets as soon as budget permits), Leatherman PST, second compass, binoculars, ammo pouch with four 8-round magazines for the AR-7 and belt first air kit on it. (The kit is packed with the things you are most likely to need first on top or clipped to the external frame, like the hiking boots.) My friends joke that the backpack is a full survival kit; the combat harness and vest are the basic survival kit; and the ex-bayonet with the gear in the handle a la the Jimmy Lile 'Rambo I' is the absolute minimum survival kit! | |
