can someone explain to me what makes this gun special? is it history? unique features? what is it? im not saying there not cool, im just wandering what it is that inpires people about them... thanks i know you guys will tell it to me how it is.

They are the best C&R pistols out there at the moment. Particularly the East German models. They are becoming scarce now. They used to be plentiful and cheap. If you enjoy collecting C&R get one. Many people use them for CWP because they are so depenable. I have two and I've never seen either one jam. The Eastern Bloc countries used them as their sidearm for 40 years.

I don't have one yet, but I've got a Russian Makarov on the way. I decided to go with a Makarov for several reasons.

I've heard that they are very dependable and rugged. I'm a revolver guy at heart because of dependability.

I can also appreciate duty firearms. Handguns that have been chosen to serve law enforcement and the military will most likely have been extensively tested and proven in the field. That is why I started with a S&W model 10.

The makarov is a simple design, few parts and easy to strip down for cleaning. An important factor for the mechanically challenged like myself.

Ammunition is relatively inexpensive and easy to find. Although some consider the 9x18 cartridge underpowered, I think that it is the largest load suitable for a "blow back" design semi auto. I wouldn't consider a .380 Makarov.

Some consider the size and caliber suitable for conceal carry.

I like the idea of owning a firearm that was utilized by our former enemy, the Soviet Union. It's kind of a Peace Dividend Trophy.

And finally, they can be had for under $200, if you buy used and shop the gun auctions.

It's just one of those things that some people like. If you have to ask, you're probably not into them. Same goes for CZ52's, Moisen Nagants and C&R guns in general. Military collectables are low cost to buy, cheap to shoot and fun to look at from a historical standpoint. Also, the sealed "tuna can" ammo will last for years in case the peoples revolution is ever necessary to retain our civil rights.

Makerovs are just like any other firearm that people like - They like them for a wide range of reasons.
Asking that is just like asking what makes a Browning, Colt, Webly or Winchester so popular - all the same reasons apply.

The only thing I would add is that the sites are poor as well.

I bought mine when the Bulgies were imported originally and got it for $125 shipped, and it was pristine.

Yeah, RMT, I think that's what I paid for my Russian with leather holster, extra magazine, and cleaning rod.
Sights seem ok up to 50 feet; after that I figure the little 9x18 won't have enough oompf to matter much. I never have checked ballistics for it.
Sure is a simple design but quite accurate for it's size...MHO.
