I know Cali has different rules about the FFL03 (C and R) license, and since I don't live there I don't know them..
And yeah, you only need to make one or two purchases in order to save the money you spend on the license.. I'd like to meet someone who can stop at 1 or 2..
You only have to use an 01 for pistols.

To summarize California C&R: (for anyone who wants to know)
1. A rifle MUST be 50 years old, regardless of C&R status. Anything newer than 50 years, must go through an 01.
2. A rifle cannot be defined as an assault weapon, by features. So if it has a pistol grip or any of that "scary" stuff, you're pretty much SOL.
3. No mags over 10 rounds.
