| 98 mauser
i have the oppurtunity to purchase a 98 that is a .308 for a great price. I would like to change the barrel to a 22-250 caliber, who makes aftermarket barrels for the mauser actions? thanks

If you want a .22-250, you probably want an accurate .22-250. Stay away from the no-name barrels. There are lots of good barrel makers out there, and a good 'smith can help you choose. Plan to spend $200 or more for an unfinished barrel. Add the cost of threading, finishing, chambering, and mounting. Might as well have the action trued and the locking lugs lapped while you are at it. Don't forget the trigger and the bedding. It can run into a bunch. If you do it on the cheap, you won't realize the full potential of the cartridge. I have had good luck with Hart and Douglas barrels, but there are a lot of other good ones out there. |

Every one here has give you really good advise. If you want a really good shooter, I would do everything that has been suggested. I have done two Mauser 98's and have spent about $1400 each. I used the Shilen barrel and Timney triggers. I had all the machine work done that was necessary and had custom stocks made. Get the Winchester style safety. They are really nice if you like custom rifles. The 257 Roberts is really sweet because it was built on a small ring 98 action. It's probably the best fitting rifle I have ever owned. My son claimed that one as soon as I brought it home. So I had a 25/06 built on a large ring 98 and it's real nice except it's a little heavy. Good luck and keep us posted.
