Love is in the air!

Suddenly my backyard population of Gray Squirrels just jumped from 2-3 to six! I've been laid up for a few weeks recovering from shoulder surgery, so I have a bit of time on my hands to watch the goings on in my backyard. It would appear that love is in the air and squirrels from outside of the local population are visiting to engage in the "chase." I watched at lunch as six busytails ran about the woods in my backyard in a flurry of activity. They queued up into a twirling, twisting, jumping conga-line that scampered all over the place. The six of them almost looked like one entity scampering up and down trees, leaping from one branch to another, bouncing along a snow covered stonewall. They are definitely in the Chasing Stage of the mating season. Good luck to them! I hope they live long and prosper. Well, that they at least prosper - abundantly so.

Your Squirrel activity description makes makes me want to grab my gun and head for the woods. The breeding season here in my location(Indiana) is over.It usually starts about the second or third week in December and last until the first or second week of January. They will also breed again in June. Thanks for the info, and the opportunity to compare our different locales.

I'm not sure if this is entireley true but I have noticed that greys normally move around in groups as the food source is availabe. Reds on the other hand, seem to stay close to one area. When I have found greys cutting on something there would be several of them and sometimes you can shoot and they won't pay you no nevermind. Reds though will book in a hurry if they know you are around.

I like our season in louisiana.
I'd rather hunt cold and dead than warm and live.
