| Rebarrel a Savage WSM
I want to rebarrel a Savage 11 in a WSM. Are all Savage barrels the same size, same thread regardless of caliber. Should I find a good Savage barrel of the right caliber, I could get it chambered and save the threading of the barrel. I figure that it will be the same feed mechanism and mags. Why reinvent the wheel. Thanks

no, all savage barrels are not the same size. most are, however with the exception of some of the first WSM's savage built, the short mag barrels have a larger shank and are not interchangeable. plus goin from a standard cartridge to a magnum requires a different bolt head.

Lefty O, thanks. I just knew it wouldn't be that easy. Now to spend a few more bucks getting the right barrel and smithing. Joined this forum a couple weeks ago and appreciate the vast knowledge of its members already. Thanks everyone

Don't overlook all the great "drop-in" or "finished" barrels that are available now for Savage rifles. I believe that high quality drop-ins can be had from Pac-Nor, Shilen, Lothar Walther and Stockade has a house brand that gets great reviews as well. I think Shilen has the most options for their Savage finished barrels...such as length, contours, neck dimensions, finishes, grades and chamberings. Shilen is the direction I'm planning on going for my next Savage barrel. It's really a great time to own a Savage......I dare say the number of after market goodies available is starting to rival the M700!!

I have had real good luck with Shilen & Hart Barrels. It's been a few years since I used a Hart Barrel but I have heard there quality is still great. I had the Hart barrel on my benchrest 6PPC that now I wish I had not sold. But I do have two custom Mausers in 25/06 and 257 Roberts with the Shilen match grade barrels and they shoot great. Both of these barrel makers have web sites that you can check out. You can even call them with questions or concerns.
