I know of someone with one of them

From what I have seen at the shooting range this is another "battle tank tough" offering from Marlin.
Personally, the .45-70 is more than I would want in recoil and muzzle blast, but if this is what you want the Marlin is an excellent choice.

I joined this forum just to tell you about my Cowboy, I put a Williams receiver sight on it and turned it into a tackdriver. It shoots Lasercast 405 grn bullets very well. I don't have the data with me, but I shoot a medium warm load and on one particular good day I outshot a buddy's Big Timber Sharps.
I think it needs a shorter front sight and a Wild West trigger and it would be my favorite of 70 or 80 guns I own.

45-70

I have a 30-30 and shot it for years and then I got the 45-70 1895GS Guide gun in 18" barrel. Love it! Yes it has big recoil, but I just love it for hunting in the thick VA brush, I have taken many deer with it and dont even think twice about small twigs and stuff in the way before I pull the trigger. I have one and so does my brother. After trying several different store bought ammo the Winchester 300 grain silver tip works the best in mine. It stamps the bull with tight groups. At the range pause between shots so the barrel does not get hot and it will group real nice.
Cowboy up and take the ride.

Friend owns one . . . .

I have a friend who now owns one.
I have gone to the range with him.
This is, as noted before, another rock solid Marlin product.
The .45-70 is still a bit much for me due to recoil and muzzle blast. But it is a high quality, accurate firearm and
now that I have examined by friend's gun I just wish I had one in, perhaps, .38-55 which I feel I could handle.

Good luck and good shooting.

I tuned one down at a gunshow for 550 in 38-55, boy do I regret that. If I had my druthers, a 40-65 is great! The Marlin Cowboy is a little light, but a great rifle, it sure balances nicely. My rifles do prefer the 405 grainers, but try the 305 with either 5744 or 2400. Unique works good too. MD Smith has some nice load data, so do a lot of other webs!

Recoil is a matter of how hot the ammo is .

Some off the shelf ammo is loaded mild , for the old Black Powder rifles . Some is loaded hot for the Marlins and / or Rugers .

If you reload ( I suspect a high percentage of .45-70 shooters do , as do I ) you taylor the ammo to your needs .

God bless

I bought an 1895 45-70 yesterday and the reloading dies are to be delivered today. I have wanted to try this round for a while, but all the others have interfered. Recoil is not normally an issue...although I still only shoot my 375 H&H standing. The cowboy rifle was a consideration, and I like the octagonal barrel, but the pistol grip stock won out. I may be able to discuss reloads after a few times at the range.

For cast bullets , try .460" .

Thanks Wry...do you recommend any particular brand of cast bullets? I load cast bullets in pistols where I try to keep the velocity under 900fps. Is there a range to reduce or eliminate leading in a rifle?

First of all , I cast my own bullets , so I can not reccomend a brand of store bought bullets .

For the marlin .45-70 , try to find bullets that are at least .460" .

My bullets are cast from pretty hard alloy and dropped directly into a 5 gallon bucket of cold water , to make them harder .

A soft load is 13.5 - 13.6 grains of Unique for 300 - 405 grain bullets .

God bless
