Don't overlook all the great "drop-in" or "finished" barrels that are available now for Savage rifles. I believe that high quality drop-ins can be had from Pac-Nor, Shilen, Lothar Walther and Stockade has a house brand that gets great reviews as well. I think Shilen has the most options for their Savage finished barrels...such as length, contours, neck dimensions, finishes, grades and chamberings. Shilen is the direction I'm planning on going for my next Savage barrel. It's really a great time to own a Savage......I dare say the number of after market goodies available is starting to rival the M700!!
