| Registered User | Receiver Damage from bolt? CMP Receiver. Hello Everyone, I've been slowly restoring a CMP garand and reached a point where I need some experienced advice. This rifle is a 2.4 million serial number from SA. The op-rod was an uncut early version. So far I've had to replace the op-rod (by choice) a new gas cylinder, the bullet guide, a few trigger assembly parts. Now the barrel is shot out. It's over a 5 on the muzzle gauge and a 4 on the breechbore gauge. I can close the bolt on a field headspace gauge with light finger pressure so the headspacing is gone as well. So a barrel is on its way. Which lead me to the issue with the receiver upon inspection. It looks like the bolt has hammer peened the receiver and caused 3 noticeable ridges to form. The bolt shows wear in the same area no doubt from this effect. ![]() The aft of the reciever looks fine otherwise. ![]() What would cause the bolt to contact this area in this manner. The rails and the rest of the receiver look really good. ![]() ![]() Bolt Cam surfaces show less then complete contact with the receiver. ![]() ![]() I'm looking for a receiver that will be promote good function, action and accuracy. If this receiver is shot then Im basically replacing everything on the gun and I'll pull the firing pin and put it on the wall. I'm looking for advice before I send out for some new grade A receivers from CMP. Thanks guys. Eric |

| Super Moderator ![]() | can you find any corresponding marks on the bolt matching those on the receiver? I would have the receiver checked for cracked and if not cracked use it. My guess was commercial heavy ammo

The Bolt surface at the top rear of the bolt has no finish left and fits in the receiver marks perfectly. (Photo 3,4 right side) So its as if the bolt was hammered into the surface instead of sliding against it. I just don't understand where that force in that direction comes from. The bolt should be sliding parallel to that surface not smashing into it... The three indentations match the bolt profile perfectly.. ![]() | |
