Smile .17 HMR

Hey I was just wondering if I'd need a permit to buy something that shoots .17 HMR, or if it's as easy to buy as an air rifle. Also, what is the price range?

It will probably be the same process as if you were going to buy a 22 rifle so you will probably have to get a permit if that is what your state requires

Argh. I was hoping that wouldn't have to happen. Any idea on pricing anybody?

It is considered a firearm so yes you have to buy it the same as any other firearm.

As for price range, depends on whether or not you get or want a handgun or a rifle in .17HMR and where you go. I've seen a Taurus Tracker Handgun in blued with 6" barrel selling for $249.99 and Savage rifles for as low as $369.99.

Just have to make sure to shop around when you are able to purchase legally.

I think you can get a savage rifle in .17HMR for much less than 370. I bought mine for 230 out the door, with wood stock, heavy barrel and accutrigger.

Sweet. Yeah I'm looking for a rifle, and less than $370 sounds affordable. How's the accuracy and range?

great

FragMaster: Sir; .17hmr are inherently accurate.
With about any of the .17's firearms you should produce 1" groups @100yds if you do your part.
Absolutely outstanding.
Practice and demand of yourself.

Do a range report with pictures

FragMaster, make sure that you can discharge firearms where you live. I notice that you have Maui, Hawaii listed as your location. I'm not familiar with the area, but I'm pretty sure that the places to use firearms are limited.

I recently saw a Savage with a thumb hole stock, new, for $219. I should have bought it, but already had two.
Muzzle velicity is listed as 2550 ft/sec with 17 gr V-max bullets and 2375 with 20 gr. lead core bullets.
For all practical purposes, with 17 grainers, you will be the same at 50 yards as you will be at 100 yards - at least that is about the way it is with mine. That should give you some indication how flat they shoot. They are inherently accurate as previously mentioned. The weak link with these guns is usually either the shooter or the optics chosen. Cheap/inadequate glass can frustrate an otherwise good shooter.

Hehe... I know - this doesn't seem to be a very angry forum site so far, which is good, cause some forums are full of tuck fards.

Anyhow, thanks guys. I'm pretty sure my optics will do. Does '45mm x 3-9X' sound good to you guys? I've got it mounted on my .177 right now, but do you think it qualifies for HMR?

As far as the gun laws go here, I've got this gultch that I can shoot anything .22 or smaller into, so it's alright. Hey thanks for everything guys.

I have an H&R (NEF) .17HMR. Actually, I have 2 of them. 22" heavy barrels, break open single shots. Love them! I put 3-9X32 scopes on them. Someone left a golf ball on the range and I used that to check my sighting on the scope. I made that little thing roll and jump from 50 yards, so I know it's good for squirrels.

As for rounds, CCI sells a 20gr FMJ bullet that doesn't explode like varmint rounds do. Excellent round for squirrels.

I got mine through budsguns.com, they have one listed now at $167, I think. But, Hawaii may be someplace that they won't ship, I don't know.

I do know that Wal-Mart sometimes carries them, but can always order one at no additional cost if they don't have it in stock. They can give you a price if you talk to them at the gun counter.

I got a Savage at Walmart for $168.00. Black synthetic stock and standard barrell. I put a 6-24x40 scope on it and I have a total of about $275.00. I get my ammo at Walmart or Academy, they are the cheapest I've found.
This is the sweetest shooting rifle.
