Plinksters, anyone?

Maybe this is the wrong forum, and I appologize if I am out of line with this post, I see most of this forum is S/G or larger bore related, it seems.

Does anyone have any experiance with the Plinkster 22's? We bought a bolt action model 802 scope combo (on sale for $99) for my daughter (who's 12yo) and she loves it, and is getting pretty good with it. She had me take the scope off because we're doing mostly short range plinking, probably 20 yards. We'll back up when the snow goes away more.

But because we were impressed with the 802, we went out yesterday and picked up a 702 semi-auto in carbon fiber. Man you can whip through a box of fifty rounds in no time flat!

So anyone here have experience with these little Mossy's? They are really nifty little pieces. I just wish Mossberg named them something a little more manly... Like the DeathMaster 1200 or something...

I haven't handled the new Mossberg .22s yet, but lots of owners like them.
The 'Plinkster' name was used on a Mossberg .22 in a thumbhole plastic stock back in the sixties & seventies - so they are trying to evoke that time.
I'm glad they brought out the new .22 rifles - been awhile since Mossberg was in the plinking game!

Regrets? I waited until I was 45 before I got my first tat. Never wanted one, even through ten years in the Navy. Then one day the wife and I got a wild hair up our butts and went and got semi-matching tattoos.

Nice tattoos. Does your 702 have a thumbhole stock? I haven't fired one yet but I have heard only good things from those I know who own one.

No, it's pretty standard looking, except for the carbon fiber...

I have one and had some feeding problems with it in the beginning but gave it a good cleaning and works great. I put a 3-9x50 scope on it and can hold 1/2" groops at 55 yards. Havn't shot it at 100yds yet. Nice rifle, will give your kids years of fun.

We still haven't had a chance to really zero them in and try for some serious accuracy. I'm hoping this weekend we can get some serious sighting in.

I got an 802 plinkster after Christmas on sale. Kid likes to shoot it. I prefer my Mosin Nagant's but also shoot it a lot as it is cheaper. Fast shooting (as quick as I can work the bolt) at 25 yards gets me a 3" grouping with the open sites.
Not a scope person so I'll stick with the opens.

But anyway, I was out firing my daughter's 802 and some strange things were happening. Several times (3 our of 80 rounds) the bullet became jammed pointing upward when chambering a bullet. The bullet sat at about a 30 degree angle, not sliding nicely into the chamber. Also as many times, it misfired. There was a definate indentation in the bullet where the firing pin struck it, but no kaboom.

I cleaned the gun out and oiled it well, and fired another 50 rounds without a hitch. I don't know if the problem was sticky operation or dumn luck.

We've also had a couple problems with the bullets lodging the same way with the 702 my wife has, and because of the semi-auto action it actually bends the bullet where it meets the brass. We've never had an actual misfire with the 702, just an occasional jam.

Other than that, I have found both 702 and 802 to be quite accurate at 25 yards. I am still waiting for the range to get cleared off a bit more before I trudge out to the 50 yard target.

Well, I had enough of my daughter getting frustrated with the missfires on the 802. We went out to the range yesterday and within the first three magazines she had six misfires. Enough was enough. We took it to the local gun shop and traded it towards a Marlin Model 60. I only took a $30 beating on the price, I figure it was worth the lessons learned.

The Marlin is a more solid feeling gun, and so far after shooting about 100 rounds before it got dark last night there wasn't one misfire, failed chamber, and a bunch of holes in pop cans. She loves the gun, and it looks great on the gun rack.

We still have the 702 for now. The wife hasn't decided if she's going to keep it or trade it. She hasn't fired the Marlin yet, but I suspect that when she does she'll be trading the Plinkster for one of those, or may be a Ruger 10/22.

...and having "Made in America by American Craftsmen" stamped proudly on the box the Marlin came in sure made me feel good too. Live and learn...

The Marlin and the Ruger are both great guns and hard to beat.

My first gun purchased was a Marlin 60. I shot it well over 10000 time the first 2 years with out cleaning it.

Dumb. (My brother and I would buy 2000 rounds of ammo and rapid fire them all in one day!)

It started to stick and when I took it to a gunsmith he called me stupid and sent me home. I tried to clean it and bent the spring. After replacing it and having my brother reclean it it shot okay but was never the same. I bought another one with the first as a trade after she started acting up again. Just worn out is what the guy I sold it to said. He parted it out then.
Wish I still had her for sentimental reasons.

Alleydude, sounds like you did the best thing at trading, good that you are having fun at one of the best past times with your daughter! Your Marlin 60 should be a blast! Check out the thread on things you shoot at. Some really good ideas!!!
I traded my single shot Model 67 Winchester [wish I had it back] for my first .22 repeater, a Mossberg Model 146B with Weaver 2X scope. I was 13 at the time back in '67. It was a fun gun and I killed my first groundhog with it.
Someday I hope to get it back, it's easy to identify, tube feed, bolt action, plastic finger grip, full monte carlo walnut stock, someone drilled holes into the stock and filled the holes up with light color wood filler, spelled out B.F. It's good to see new model .22's coming out. I have had a few mis fires with ammo that didn't get the proper primer in the rim. All in all the .22 ammo is pretty good with the qualities produced.

Thanks for all the replies. Well, we are now Plinksterless. We traded the 702 in on a 1992 Ruger 10/22 with a scope and a SWEET sling. We also put on layaway a 40th Anniversary Ruger 10/22 like new with box and documentation.

So I won't be posting much in the Mossberg forum, unless it has to do with shotguns.
