| Member | I have 2 barels right now and I am on the prowl. I am looking for a heavy cal. i know like a 30.06 or 375. and also want at least 12" barrel. I will be going Elk hunting in 09 and want to start preparing now. (might have a lil problem with hunting but so what, its all i do!) anyhow- what do you guys think and customs are absolutely fine. |

| Senior Member | Get ready for some major recoil What you shoot is entirely your business and I wish you well with your choices. Just note they don't call it "bone crunching recoil" for nothing. What you do now you will pay for later in life as the hand and wrist can only take so much pounding. Think it out before jumping into rifle calibers for 12 inch pistols. |

| Member | Ive already had 2 hand surgeries. never really thought bout that! (kinda seems stupid not too now). But being a hunting gun that i am not going to shoot "all' the time might not be that bad. i mean, how bad can it be? JK! |

| Senior Member | From Nathagdad - well, if I had one hand surgery, not two as you mention I would not shoot anything over a .22 for a handgun. But, it is your life and your choice. I would advise speaking to a hand surgeon before continuing this course of action. |

A friend of mine that is in heavy recoil handguns sends his to have a brake installed before he ever fires them.I liked his .35 Whelen but I think it was a 16" barrel.Anyway it had lots of power with his handloads. If I were going .375,I think I would go with that new one that is out that is about the same as the H&H but a beltless case. sam. | Member | correct. im gonna shoot no mter what. im a chef and thats where the problem lies. 24 years chopping, dicing, skinning and deboning... u get the idea. shooting relieves all the other pains! anyway, elk hunt is gonna happen and still up in the air. 30-06 still seems more reasonable i guess. |

| Member | Just my 2 cents I like the .445 super mag (Dan Wesson cal.) and the S&W 460. Loaded with Barnes XTP bullets. A 240 grain around 1500-2000 FPS should do the job. I love big hand guns, have both the .445 DW, 500 & 460 S&W The 500 might be a bit much but I promise it will put them down. Once you get by the muzzle blast and reallize it won't hurt you, you'll be deadly! Even a 44 mag would work! ![]() Last edited by Kaboom; 01-29-2008 at 05:01 PM. Reason: spelling |

| Member | How bad is that 460? there was a hunting show on with Larry Weishuhn and he talked up the 460. I mean you only shoot 1 at a time anyway right!

| Member | Yes it's a double action. If I had to pick one BIG handgun cartrige that'd be it. percussion is big but kick isn't. I've let guys shoot it that haven't shot anything bigger than a 357 and once they get over the blast they relize it's not so bad. I can shoot it one handed ok, my accuracy suffers though, not that I'm a dead eye to start with ![]() Last edited by Kaboom; 02-06-2008 at 08:33 PM. |

| Member | By the way with the hand surgery thing, if u got your privates operated on to fix it would you quit using it? yeah, i thought so. If i wanted to sit home and not do anything i wouldnt have gotten it operated on. not bein a smart ass i just hear that all the time from my family.... I broke my hip in 2000 on a 4 wheeler and spent 9 months on my tail- i ain't quitting anything anytime soon! life is way too short. Anyway- i've decided to sell my 7mm super 14 barrel. and when i buy the new one I'll let ya'll know what way I went. Thanks for ur input.

| Member | I've had broken fingers on both hands & some in the back of my right, I still shoot my .460 & 500 all the time, the only thing that hurts my hand is letting go of green backs (unless it's for a new piece)!! |

| Member | yes in the contender. more than likely going 30.06 though. anything i should know about? ONE other guy on here mentioned that on another post. but when i look at custom barrels there is no mention of anything or anywhere else for that matter. theres a few guys here that shoot them if im not mistaken in the contender. info is key so let me know what your talkin about. thanks

| Registered User | 30-06 & Contender, don't do it! I posted a query on another board, cause I wanted to make sure of my thinkin', and EVERY reply I've gotten so far says NOT to shoot a 30-06 using a Contender frame. If you're gonna shoot a 30-06, use an Encore frame. Brian, in Ohio TC-L : TC-L |

| Senior Member | tc, consider the 45/70 for your contender. I've fired it and find it a good shooter with a healthy kick but it's not unbearable. The 06, IMHO, may be somewhat harsh. Depending on the type of grip is on your contender the big boys can be down-right hurtful. Mine has the old square-back grips that will cut into the web a bit. You know...Bang...damned...ouch! The newer style that are rounded are much more enjoyable. I wouldn't even consider a 460 in a Contender...that bear's kick is bad enough in a rifle. |
