m1 carbines at gun show about the gun show

went to gun show today saw 2 m1 carbines that cought my eye becouse they where only marked for 300 dollers

the first was an iver johnson for $310 looked to be in good shape, and the other one i have now idea who made it it was beutiful but the only marking i could find on it where on the top of the barrel right in front of the chamber and it said US carbine 30 cal m1, and info on these rifles would be great. why where they so cheap and every other m1 carbine in the building was $600 and up? hopeing they will still be there tomarrow, they price was so low i thought that maybe there is something undesireable about those models or somthing... am i a moron for not buying one?

Iver Johnson ARe copies and Are Not USGI Recievers, that is why they are cheaper...I can't say about the other one if there was no brand...May have been a Universal , which is also NOT USGI...

Universals are marked on the front receiver bridge. So is plainfield.

It could be a USGI carbine. When they were designed they has a small flip sight. The adjustable sights were added later and they cover up the manufacturer's name. Use your bore light and look under the back of the sight, just about the serial number. Also, was the barrel marked?

I owned an Iver Johnson carbine. It was a great little gun. I put it in USGI wood. You would not know the difference from 10 feet. Most of the parts were interchangeable ith USGI. Offer him $250 and remind him you can get an Inland from CMP for $419.

If the other is a Plainfield...buy it. Plainfield is a clone but the best made.
Universals are ok but the quality went south toward the end of their reign. If the operating rod is cut out where the bolt locking lug fits into the slide check it very close for cracks if you decide to buy and then don't buy.
Iver Johnson are normally a safe buy but on some of the later models the bolts had a tendency to peen because of the softer steel used.
