| interchanging .38 special and .30 in the M1 I have a Universal M1 and was wondering if there was interchangeable ammo. I know that some ruger .357 accept both .357 and .38 special. just wondered if the Universal M1 would do the same thing or something similar. |

| No No, but there were (back in the 1960-70 era) some people who made conversions of M-1's to .357 mag although it did not produce any market success. A lot of research might find some sources to work back toward these projects. Good luck and good shooting. |

| Super Moderator ![]() | Dont confuse the guy Nathangdad... He is comparing cartridge uses...not asking about .357 in an M1 Carbine... And FYI...Universal got one running in .256WCF (the "Ferret") which is a necked down .357...they even managed to make one into a pump .44mag. (the "Vulcan"). Iver Johnson (when they were making Carbines) had one running in 9mm WinMag once...(a pretty dead-end cartridge with a real short life span). At least one custom maker has turned out a few in .45WinMag., but there is a good bit of custom work there.

| Just want to make sure nothing gets confused here. As Mooseman said - nothing is interchangeable in your universal - only shoot .30 carbine in there! A new rifle would be required to shoot .357. By the way - welcome to the forum. Stick around a while - pretty nice bunch of guys and gals around here.

| Senior Member | nice to have you! All the other posts are accurate. You can't shoot a .38 caliber cartridge out of a gun made for .30 caliber ammunition.

| Moose, you forgot the 5.7 Spitfire (5.7 Johnson MM). This cal could probably make a good come-back today. If you want a .357 rifle, check out Taurus's version of the Colt Lightning. Mid range in price with a short pull pump action. Last edited by oldjarhead; 02-10-2008 at 11:45 AM. |
