Help with a 1906 Model 94!

My uncle found an old 1894 in a ditch after Hurricane Katrina. I am trying to clean it up for him. I looked up the serial # and it was made in 1906. It has an octagonal barrel and is chambered in 30 WCF.

Does anyone know how to get the front handguard off? I had to drill the handguard band screws out because they were stripped. It looks like someone use regular screwdrivers on this gun and stipped most of the screws.

Where can i get replacement parts if I need them?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cant get any info right now but will try later.Sounds like you have a real colectors item and unless you are very skillful I would advise leaving it alone.Maybe Mooseman will get in on this. sam.

You might want to run the s/n by the police in case anyone reported it lost or stolen. "Finders keepers" doesn't go far in court.

Check with the police first like rfc357 said, and if you get to keep the gun I would take it to a gunsmith.

I actually checked with the sheriff's office, but Katrina moved things so far they said that they had no record of it and probably never will. I left them my name and address. It is pretty rusty. Salt water and a month or more of laying in a ditch didn't help. I've actually talked to a gunsmith and he said use WD-40 and 00 steel wool to get the rust off. I'm using 0000 wool. It doesn't appear to be taking any blue off, but I can get the receiver apart yet. I have gotten a little movement on the lever and the hammer and trigger move now. Nothing moved when I first got it. I wish I had taken "before" pictures. This was the rustiest gun I have ever seen. He also found a lever action Marlin 410 shotgun. The barrel is bent in a curve, but I have been able to get it apart to clean it. It was made sometime beween 1929 and 1932.

I'm taking the barrel to the gunsmith. I don't think either of these guns will ever be shooters again, but they should clean up well enough to be nice wall hangers.
