Which Bolt Action....

Guys and girls...

I'm planning on getting rid of my Rem 710 and picking up a new bolt action with the tax return money. However, there are many considerations and many manufacturers. My goal is 1/2 - 3/4 MOA (the closer to 1/2MOA the better). Allowance... $800ish. I've been thinking about the Savage 10 HS Precision and the Remington 700 with a new aluminum bedded Hogue stock, but I know there are many other bolt actions out there (Browning A-Bolt, Weatherby Mark V, etc...). I'd like to have a heavy target barrel if possible to put a muzzle break on.. but that's later on down the road. I already have a Nikon 4.5-14x40 scope and a bipod. Which rifle with or without mods to equal $800ish would you guys suggest? Thanks guys and gals.

From what I have found you can pick up a savage with all bells and whisles for that price, and have money left over for ammo.

You did not mention a caliber but as you are familiar with a wide variety of guns you no doubt are familiar with the calibers offered.

For you payment area it is a very wide open market for your pick of rifles. Naturally, with the accuracy you want it would be a matter of a target/varmit weight/style barrel.

I would go to a number of gunstores and handle various rifles until you find what "fits" you best in terms of size, weight, balance, trigger pull, etc. That would be the rifle for you.

Also, if you have another bolt action which you like you might want to check out custom barrels, wildcat calibers, etc. as this is not entirely eliminated by your payment range.

The new Marlin bolt gun shoots pretty straight. Savage of course is known for their accuracy as is remington.

Check out the Savage model 12 has a variety of choices for barrel length,stock materials,and calibers.Same could be said for the Ruger model 77VT.Both fall in the $800.00 price you are looking for.
I would however rethink getting a muzzle brake installed.(some who have had this done regret it later)the choice is still yours though.
Remington model 700Sendero could be another option,but I believe it is a little higher in price than the other two above.

Hi feller if your not Interested in Savage's or another Remington take a look at the NEW Ruger Hawkeye mine shoots 3 shot groups, bullet hole accurate at 100 yards.
I have the All Weather in 308...A.H

Note: Thats with 150 gr. pointed Remington Core Lokt's.

HI 270wsm ! No it's not heavy as in a Target type barrel and it's not a lite contour barrel either.
Not knowing much about barrels I can only say it's a regular barrel. BUT because you asked I've noticed it looks a litte above average ,to maybe be a we bit bigger than norm.
The over all rifle seems to also be just a tad more heavier than I was expecting and is with a scope on it. TO ME.
Others that have held it Loved it and didn't think it was to heavy. Before I got this rifle I retired my Remington 742 about 8 years ago and started useing a Marlin 375 caliber rifle I bought back in 1983 that I had never used so maybe due to the Marlin being liter is why I think the Ruger is heaver.
Two -70 another member here bought one a few weeks ago so maybe he'll come along and comment about his too.
The actions on the Rugers is beautiful which you know is a Mauser type and with the new tooling and new hammer mills Ruger recently installed your gonna get a straight shootin rifle...A.H

The Savage 10FP HS Prec is an EXCELLENT rifle. If you want supreme accuracy in an out of the box, factory rifle, look no further than the Savage. My 10HS has never had a problem, and never shot anything under 1MOA. I would always choose Savage over Remington, for the simple fact that Savage is all that you could ever want in a Remington, with near half the cost, and factory guaranteed 1 MOA.

SniperCentral.com has recently reviewed the Savage 10FP McMillan, and the Remington SPS Tactical/Varmint. Both reviews were good, but the Savage seemed to have better everything. FYI the HS stock is pillar bedded

The Ruger Hawkeye is an excellent shooter, hard to beat, built like a tank, and the 308 is an excellent shooter inch or under at a 100 yards, i had one of the Remington 770's in 270 win. it was a great shooter and i traded it up on a weatherby vanguard with the tan black webbed stock, the target that came with the gun all 3 shots were in 1 hole at 100 yards, it is 270 win. as well

I have 4 Savage rifles M-40 (22 Hornet), M-10FP (.308), and 2 Mk-II rimfires. Great quality, great price, great accuracy out of the box. All you could ask for in a dollar-wise medium range category.
Customer service...somewhat iffy.
