.223 bolt action

I was talking with a buddy about benchrest shooting and what type of rifle to buy to to practice shooting and modifications on and he recommended the savage stevens model 200 in .223 but I want to shop around a bit before I make up my mind. Anyone got any ideas?

Hi,
Im really impressed with my CZ527 american. it shoots half inch at 150m.
Im sure a 527 varmint would make an excellent bench build.

In .223Rem.,Savage is issuing a 1in9" twist in their bolt actions.I would sugest getting that instead of the 1in12" twist so you can have an even larger bullet selection. sam.

Savage/Stevens 200's are good rifles from what I have heard. But I have to reccomend looking at the Savage only rifles. They will come with the accutrigger and probably a nicer stock. They are a great deal for the $$$.

The current production guns enjoy a high reputation for
quality and accuracy. This gun would probably never
disappoint you but it would not hurt to handle some
rifles made by other manufacturers for weight, balance,
"fit" to the shoulder, etc. so as to find the one that
seems most natural for you to handle.

I have a Stevens .223 for varmints and it shoots very well. I'll try and attach a scan of a target. This was made at 100 yds with factory ammo and using a sandbag for a rest. It was also early January so not exactly ideal conditions. I'm just waiting for it to get a bit warmer so I can go to the range and try my reloads

I don't have a 200 but, I have heard nothing bad about them and plenty of good. I plan to get one in .25-06 in the future.
