m14 manufacturers?

im relatively new to rifles and id hate to sound like a "noob" but im intrested in a m14 i was wondering if you have to have a special linsence to buy one and is there any good manufacturer you guys can recommend.
id only be using it to shot targets.

any help would be greatly appritiated

I got mine from Fulton Armory. It's a special one-off they did for me to comply with British regulations. Excellent service and I'm delighted with it!
(some folks say they're pricy....but I'm a happy customer)

Springfield is the largest manufacturer, several smaller custom builders. Different's M1A site has a ton of info, check out m14firinglineforum.com. No special license is needed, some states well have a limit on mag capacity. What do you want to use it for? You can tie up 3-4 grand in a scoped, national match grade rifle.

unfortunatly i can only congure up around 1000 but id be useing it only for target shooting

and how accurate are these rifles?

for a springfield m1a standard grade about $1,500
and approximately $ 2,000 for a match grade they have a super match which is close to $3,000 maybe more. they ain't cheap!!!!

Mine (Fulton Peerless M14) shoots under 0.5moa at 600metres.

where does one look for a federal ordenace m14?

i was also wondering (seeing how im a little short of cash) if you can build one, like get a peice here and there untill i have the whole gun?is that legal and/or logical?

What has not been made clear, but was surely intended, is that the 'M14's available are not the full automatic ones. Civilian legal M14's or M1A's are semi auto. Buying pieces and trying to assemble would cost you more in the long run. Imagine trying to buy your motorcycle that way. There are no cheap quality shortcuts. If you want a good gun that will last you years, you will have to almost double the price you want to spend.As you admit, you are relatively new to rifles, but your tastes are well advanced. To get a good gun, and the M14-M1A is a good one, it's gonna hurt the pocket a little more.

thank you for the input. i dont know when i will be able to buy one but, someday i will get an m14. i probibly wont buy another gun untill that gun is a m14.

I see standard grade SAI's going for around $1200 some times. A standard well shot about 1.5-2 moa. NM rifles well shot under 1 moa, but not many shooters do. You can do some easy mods to a standard and get down to near 1 moa.

I think holding a 6 inch group at 600 meters is more with the ammo and the shooter. I am sure you must have had some work done to it as well, have you? glass bedding, accurizing? custom sights etc

I have a Springfield Armory M1A, that has had some work done to it and has Hand Selected rear match Sights and I have filed the front sight to keep from having to put a truck load of clicks on. It is a Standard issue and not a heavy barrel, so if I slow fire and keep the barrel cool, using LC Ammo, the rifle could shoot a 6 inch group at 600. You are referring to a supported position though, cuz I don't think I have ever shot a Unsupported 6 inch group at 600. Maybe a few of my rounds were within 6 inches. Usually it is a 20 shot string.

Just spent today on the Electronic target range (IBSR), having fun at various targets popping up from 50-400 metres using my M14. Guys behind me said I was making it look too easy (sounds like boasting but that's what they said), target up, sight-squeeze, target falls.
My M14 is as came out of the box from Fulton's, it is glass bedded and has match sights (Check out their Peerless model) and a standard 22" length, 1 in 10 barrel in stainless steel. Only thing I have added to it is a target foresight tube with interchangeable elements.
Depends what you mean by "supported", I usually shoot prone and with a 1907 sling; that is all the support I use; no bipods or bags. For ranges out to about 400m, I use 155gn ball (RG L42A1), over that I tend to use 168gn Sierra handloads.

If I use a couple of sandbags front & rear, and my scope I can get down to 2-4 inches at 600m and regularly hit the spottin disc. (on a good day)

I tend not to shoot 20 round strings, usually if I'm grouping not more that 5 rounds.

The rifle is a British spec version with no gas system and is straight-pull bolt action only.

Wingwiper, I have a Federal Ordinance M14A ... and with the National Match sights, can do pretty well at 600 yards too... I'd say sub 6" groups with LC stuff and tighter groups with handloads. For me, this is supported.

Aside from the National Match sights, it is also an early enough receiver 39XX machined under Karl Maunz and Jack Karnes.

This is all original, all G.I. parts. I used to shoot it competitively until my eyesight started to wane.
My shooting partner went on to tie the National record for military highpower, he is Utah Air Guard SSgt Stuart Mackey. I wish I kept up with the shooting and less with rushing through life.
