In the 1960's a number of people were into what you might want to call extreme wildcatting. Yes, what you describe was done and no it was not a good idea. It was more a test case of how far can you take an idea. I recall one person calling it an attempt to out-Weatherby Roy Weatherby.
Overbore does have limits.
Also, several people put .40 caliber bullets into the .30-06 to make what they called 400-06. Again, not exactly a success. The same was done with the .375 H@H bullet into the .30-06 case. On getting to a more
practical level 8mm Mauser bullets were put into the .30-06 case as well as the .338 Winchester magnum bullet.
