Agreed ... if the SHTF ... you go with what you have, not what you dream of having. You make due with what you have handy.

Git a loooong looong hollowed out log and some tambourines; giggle and wiggle; Bob Dylan and Arlo Guthrie and you'll be left alone.

... become a U.N. supporting Democrat and you'll be left alone too. Frankly... I couldn't stand to even have that association and would stand proudly against them any day...

Not sure what you meant, but GPS satellites do NOT receive information other than from their assigned tracking stations.
what you can do is look at Cell Phone Towers/repeaters and see where THAT cell phone was last used and then where it was used before, to gain a sense of direction. How long this info is retained in a Cell Phone Station, I do not know, but after finding out that the Detroit Senator had 14000 of his personal Text Messages retrieved from up to 6 years ago, your guess is as good as mine.
GPS Satellites only transmit their locations and time, there may some sub info sent to the tracking stations as far as battery life, solar panel performance, circuitry operation etc. but they are NOT receiving signals form the General Public. There are Commo Sats that act as repeaters and they are on special frequencies and you need a Satelite phone for that.
