| Questions You did not give good info as to condition of the gun? The 740 did not, in the long run, receive reviews of the higher level afforded the Remington semi's that followed it. Perhaps those with more 740 experience will add their posts. Last edited by nathangdad; 02-23-2008 at 07:52 PM. |

| Why do you post if you dont know anything? The 740 Rem. was manufactured from 55-59 and the 742 was mfg from 60to80.At 80% they all run about what he is asking. My experience, the .308 and .243 (short cartridges)are a little more accurate altho the .30-06 class has good hunting accuracy.Dont put your hand above the forearm when firing. That is where the gas exhausts at and it makes your hand hurt. The 742 was the same as the 740,just mfg at a later date,I believe they had a plastic dust cover too and the 740 was metal, but not sure. sam. | The main difference between the 740 and the 742 is that they teflon coated more parts in the 742. Prices vary around the country for the rilfes. I agree with the above on the price. It should be about right for a rifle in the condition stated. Look the rifle over well. Pay special attention to the wear in the action. Make sure none of the parts look especially worn. Ask him why he is selling it. Then ask him again in a different way. This series of rifles are very good rifles. They just need to be cared for and clean more thoroughly than most rifles. So, have a good look.

| better check inside the receiver tward the back on the left side and see if the bolt has eatin into the receiver , 742's were notorious for that thats then the 7400 came along

| To Samuel who attacks without facts The 740 did not in the long run receive the better reviews afforded to the Remington semi's that followed it. This is an absolutely correct statement. Asking others with greater experience to share their viewpoints is nothing other than what it means - an opportunity to enrich all of us with knowledge and experience. Why do you choose personal attacks over rebuttal with facts? It appears you do not know how to respond intellectually. Emotionalism and personal attacks are the methods of the uninformed seeking to justify their veiwpoint at the expense of others. Do you really think in this age people care about attacks in the form of insults? You are acting like Richard Nixon in his early California campaigns when he liked to call his opponents "pinkos" hoping to infer he was a true American. |

| Thor's Hammer ![]() | Sam- I have been looking at the exact samrifle but in .270. It is well use, for $275. Ihave played with it, and done as ood a visual as I can without disassembling. No obvious wear problems, nice bore. But you seem leary of the longer calibers?

| I'm confused here ? When you say 740 you really mean 7400 don't you ? The 7400 is different than the 742 due to an upgrade to the bolt. Read two-70's post is to why this upgrade came about. If I'm correct in asumeing the rifle is a 7400 then latch on to it and happy hunting with it, it's a great rifle. I own a 742 and like two-70 said when you look into the receiver you can see where the bolt has galled a thin narrow rail. The 7400 doesn't do this...A.H |

| Getting back to the original question, I would take a pass on any 740 that came my way. Too many potential wear issues. Lots of better rifles out there. |

| I used to have a 740. It's the only Remington that I've ever sold. I own a 7400 now, and it feeds flawlessly and is rather accurate. |

| From the "For what it's worth" dept., I own two 740s. One, purchased in mint condition is a BDL with absolutely stunning wood, would be called at least "AAA" grade today and it functions fine. The other, purchased as a "beater" at a bargain price.....works like a BEATER purchased for a bargain price! I hope I've been clear enough...lol. They can be a very nice rifle, ask if you can check for function and accuracy, couldn't hurt to shoot 1 or 2 groups with it. I have also owned two 7400s and like them as well. Owned a 742 yrs ago...no problems there either...but all those guns were purchased new. |

| Thor's Hammer ![]() | Sam- What is your opinion of a 740 in 270? Well used, but in good mec. shape for $275? Actually, I just want a pump rifle, but it's got to shoot well enough to take deer-sized game to 200yds. It will get scoped with a tip-off 3x9x40. (For my son in OK)

| My experience with both M740 and M742 is the higher pressure higher volumn cartridges like .270win and .30-06 fall short in the accuracy dept.I believe this is caused by the extra trauma created by the higher pressures and higher volumn of gasses. The .280rem.,in high powder capacity cartridges but lower pressure usually show good accuracy(1 1/2"to2" at 100yds)but when I got into .270,.30-06 higher pressure loads they usually went to larger groups,(2"to4" groups)For some reason the shorter cartridges like .244/6mm and .308 held good accuracy and right now I have a .308 that loaded with the slower powders for this casing like IMR4895,carry,s great accuracy. It will go MOA and under. .270 and .30-06 do much better in accuracy using moderate loads of IMR4350 or IMR4831 and keeping pressures under 48k lbs..$275 is a little high according to my book but might be worth it as a hunting rifle.I would never buy .270or.30-06 unless I reloaded.I have always been able to get under 2" groups with them by loading moderately.I just reread your post and you say pump rifle. The M740 is semi.My experience with the M760 rifle was about the same,as long as I kept the pressure down, they made great deer class rifles out to 300yds.In my experience it isnt the two piece stock,it is the pressure, and you do not loose that much by using moderate loads. sam.
