Smith and Wesson Model 629 6" 44 Magnum

I recently purchased a 6" S & W described above off of Guns America-got it Saturday and took it out to the range to try it out today. Shot .44
Special and .44 Magnum. I couldn't believe the differnce between the
Special and Magnum loads-like day and night. Had not a problem with the .44 Special as far as recoil was concerned. The .44 Magnums were a different story-needless to say I only shot 6 of these and went back to the .44 Specials. I also have a Model 629 8 3/8" 44 Magnum and the recoil is easier to handle on this one as compared to the 6"

Neophyte,

Seems like I can't get enough of them. Got a 7 1/2 Ruger Redhawk 44 on the way. Can't wait to shoot it. Am waiting until I get it to try the 300 grain 44's-probably tear my hand off. Is it safe to fire the 300 grain in my 6" and 8 3/8" Model 629's? Thanks

Vigilante: Sir; I don't know about the 629's. Sir; I do know the Rugers

will and ask for more. Super Blackhawk, Super Redhawk and plan to have more.
Rehawk is an outstanding model from Ruger.

Will they tear your hand off? No. Will you get a thump.

just let the grip do what it does. It'll roll in your hand and re-set for the next.
Shoot a box of 240-250+ until you get comfortable.

Follow up when you can.

I shot S&W 629 SS 8-3/8 rental at the gun range today. I want to get a feel for the .44 magnum round. First shot almost made me sh** my undies. Overall It's an awsome shooting gun. Deadly accurrate and very well made with target trigger and hammer out of the box. I'm not a handgun expert, but this gun made me look like I was an experienced shooter. As with any firearm GRIP PROPERLY, BREATH, AIM, & SQUEEZE. I will be buying one in the near future.

might think. Despite Dirty Harry movies and mountains of friendly printed
material over the decades the simple fact remains the .44 mag is a very powerful cartridge and only a statistically small number of shooters master it.

Years ago I had a Ruger .44 mag single action. I handloaded to a bit more powerful load than the standard .44 special and this is where I found my
"sweet spot" with the gun. If I still had my equipment and notes I would post my load for you.

I think the .44 special is a great cartridge for a handgun but you might want to experiment with reduced loads in the .44 mag case. Many shooters do this to find their own "sweet spot".

Ain't them .44 mags a hoot to shoot? I start with 250 gr. .44 mags for a
few cylinders full and then shoot .44 specials ( the 180gr Hornady and
200 gr. Gold Dot HP's) are really accurate cream-puffs in my 629-6,with a
6" barrel,but would take a deer if they crossed paths.

I also have a 629 Classic 6" barrel. I love to shoot it (pocketbook doesn't though)! After about 4 wheels my wrists start to feel it so I switch from it to my 686 and then back. Mostly shoot the Winchester White box from WalMart but I have a box of heavy hand loads hollow points a friend loaded for hunting but gave them to me instead.

Want some fun? Shoot the ,44 mag and then pick up a .22 pistol! You will wonder if you even pulled the trigger!

It used to be common to find a M 29 on a table at a gun show, the price would be right and always you'd get a box of magnums, with maybe 3 rounds gone, thrown in for free.

Trying to buy a 629 now and it is like buying a car. Went to gun show this weekend and never seen such prices in my life. If Gun prices are as high as the ones at that show, I am a very wealthy person. Found 3 629's and the cheapest was a 629-1 marked $759.00. The rest were higher. Offered the man $550.00 for the one marked 759.00 and I believe that I insulted the gentleman. I thanked him for his time, and told him that at least someone there was interested in one of his guns and the offer would stick if he wanted my name and number.

I'd love to shoot a .454casull. Anything like a .50 Desert Eagle?

The Desert Eagle is an auto-loader built by Magnum Research that is chambered for the .50AE which develops more power (around 1400ft-lbs) than the .44rem.mag,(1000lbs+) but not quite up with the .500 S&W revolver which developes around 2500ft-lbs. sam.

I've had a 629 for well over 10 years... bought it for $350 brand spankin' new, and have shot it quite a bit. It's one of my favorites in the safe, but IMHO there's no comparison between the .44 mag and the .500 S&W in the recoil department. The .44 is to the .500 what the .32 Mag is to the .357. One of my best friends brings his custom shop .500 to the range, and I've shot it quite a bit.

But I haven't bought one yet... and probably won't.

My .44 is just fine, TYVM. My back yard hasn't been invaded by Wooly Mammoths for a few thousand years, and most likely won't in the very near future. I'd have a hard time justifying it, even to a wife that insists I buy very nice pieces at gun show. (She dragged me across a show one day, pointed to a Citori with duratouch and INSISTED I buy it for pheasant hunting. Same with the John Wayne .45, and my Colt Gold Cup NM. Wonderful woman... but I doubt if she'll ever talk me into the .500.

I couldn't/wouldn't want to feed it anyway. But they ARE a hoot to shoot.

I carried a M 29, 4" as a duty gun for I guess about 7 years. We could carry handloads back then. I usually loaded a 220 gr LSWC at about 1000 fps. It was plenty for shooting people. I, at times, carried the .44 with WWST. I guess they still make'm.

The only model 29's Ive seen lately are the new classic series, nickle plated with a 6" barrel. My local dealer has them priced for over $900. Beautiful revolver but way above my pay grade.
