Fat 42?

I am not sure if i am posting this in the correct place or not. if not plz point me in the correct way. i have a very old military style gun but I have no pics yet. the only thing that i can really read on it is a place that says fat 42. I dont know what kind of gun it is so if you have any ideas id appreciate them. i also have no clips or bullets with it to help my search.

baker9017...First of all, welcome to Gunandgame.com.

Now to discuss your old military rifle. In order for other members here to help identify what you have, please re-examine very carefully everything on your rifle. List any and all words you can identify, numbers, serial number, Manufacturer, etc.

Then if you can remove the forestock and or butt stock, look carefully on the barrel for words/numbers stamped there.

We need a beginning point to help identify your gun. I would guess there's some of the above information on the gun if you carefully examine it. Of course, pictures are invaluable, too, but even without them, the other inforation I've requested will help start your gun identification process.

CMP updated their their M1 Carbine page with some prices and more information.
Inland-made M1s will be the first for sale, with orders accepted April 30. Other manufacturers will be released later, but apparently not before September. Price for Inlands will be $495.00 plus $22.95 shipping and handling. I had hoped they'd be about a hundred bucks cheaper, but oh well.
There's a limit of one manufacturer per customer in 2007, so you could buy one Inland, one Winchester, etc.
CMP describes the guns as Service Grade.

Carbines have been rebuilt and refinished at least once and will exhibit in most cases varying degrees of wear on many of the parts and generally no noticeable or significant pitting on metal. All the carbines have late features - such as adjustable sights (heavily staked) with bayonet lug bands and rotary safeties. Metal parts are mixed USGI. There are no carbines with early features. Muzzle will gauge 3 or less on muzzle gauge. Stocks will be replacement Italian marked M2 type birch or beech pot belly or USGI walnut but having seen heavy use with possible rebuild marks (no original stock cartouches remain). Most stocks have the “FAT” stamp / cartouche (Fabbrica Armi Terni ).

That solves one mystery. There was speculation before that the guns were returns from the governments of Greece or Korea, but it was actually Italy.

it is a bolt gun...i am at school right now and my gun is at home so iw ill check it out this weekend, i do know there is a bayonet lug on it...i will try to get some pics too that woudl be the best thing to do.

I have been checking out the M38 and that didnt look right. so i did a little more looking, and i think it is more like the M91 long rifle.

i will get home this weekend and check it out a lil better. what exactly shoudl i look for???

I need some help with this gun also...grand dad just passed and I found this FAT 42 in closet...missing top piece of stock and rings and clip...front and rear site in tact. rear site adjust via spring loaded push button on left side of site...bolt action, clip fed. overall clip length is 1.25, so it must be small caliber..stock and barrel have matching numbers..FAT 1946 X 6548...it has two rear sling clips, one on the bottom and one on the side....need help determining what I found and are there parts...

if you go to the m1 garand forum and look at FAT42? you will see paperclip. place your cursor on the paperclip and it will show 4 attachments. click and you will see 4 pictures.....

this may not be right way to place pictures but the best I could do...if there is another way to post photos all help will be appreciated...
