long range help

Zossen,Germany was the first tournoment(free style) I had won at the distance of 1760 yards. I used a Barrett AW-50 50 cal BMG and got a 1.66 inch group. The guy who got second place used a small caliber for this distance(Mauser 98 8mmx57); and got a 2.12 inch group. What would be the best starting caliber for a person who is new to this distance? Is a .50 cal overkill?

You think 8mm mauser is a small caliber? Compared to a 50 maybe but, it is still a big round. Before you take my advice, know that I have never shot anything over 200 yards. I would probably use a 30-06, simply because I could never afford a 50. 30-06 is slightly larger than the mauser(7.62x63mm) and is the right balance of bullet weight to powder. It flies straight and isn't affected by wind as much as smaller round (.223, .243, etc.). It was meant to hit a target a 1100 yards, bare sight. If you have a 50 use it. Unless you are shooting rabbits its not overkill.

Actually "8mm mauser" is 7.92 mm. Maybe you should look into a few of the newer long range cartriges ie. 338, 300 win mag, or even 408 Cheytac or .416 barret. But as said before, sadly, I have never shot anything beyond 300 yards.

the .416 barret looks awful inpressive. I just watched a show on the military channel where they were getting a nice group at 2500 yards. but it might of been churched up for T.V.

That sounds 'different'.What kind of contest competes an 8mm against a .50BMG?.Who is trying to shoot 1760yds with an8MM Mauser? sam.

thanks for the help guys. To answer some of your questions, this competition the shooter can use any caliber he or she wants. And to calrify its not a 7.92x57 he modified it to be 8mm. dont ask me why but he has been shooting at this distance longer than i have and i trust he has a good reason. Im not at liberity to reveal this persons name but he is a veteran of World War II and he is russian

A WWII Russian veteran that perfers to shoot a Mauser. That's interesting. Oh well, to each his own.

The 338 Lapua is supposed to be better than the 50 bmg with a smaller case.

I have to call BS on this one for several reasons...

1.) You are talking about a drop of about 500 inches over the course of a mile.

2.) You would be the current World Record holder (By about 3 inches).

3.) I can't even figure out what MOA that would be.

Pile O' BS. That's 0.094 MOA. Modified a 7.92 to an 8mm? Give me a break. They don't use yards in Germany. 1760 yards is exactly a statute mile.

Someone with more imagination than shooting ability.
