When I get back from Iraq in 5 months I want to get a dog for grouse hunting in Maine. I was going to go with a brittany. What do you think?

Excellent choice! Springer Spaniels, Lewellyn Setters, and German Wirehaired Pointers or Italian Spinonis are also a great choice.

Are you active military, or contractor?

I'll second the Spinone Italiano, their hide, nose and eyes are perfectly suited for penetrating really heavy cover. My spin plowed right over a two foot tall hedge tree sucker on his way to retrieve a downed dove with nary a flinch or whimper. Returned on the same track even, though he did remember the hedge sucker and avoided it.

thanks guys I live in Maine and there is a lot of low fur trees where I hunt so a brittany would be the right dog for me. and I hear they are great for beginners. oh yeah I'm in the Army.

When you get back from in country and want a Britany, email me, I have a good friend that has top of the line Britnays. He is in Alabama, I don't know if your willing to come this far but his dogs are the best. H does alot of bird hunting and he conducts hunts and he wont use anything else.

There are two distinct lines of Brittany in the US at this time. The line recognized by the AKC as Brittany is a bigger dog that was developed for American field trials. Delmar Smith was instrumental in their development. They are big runners and great dogs if you hunt from horse back as some quail hunters do. The other line is recognized by the UKC as Epagneul Breton or French Brittany. They are the original line imported from France. These dogs are smaller and hunt closer. A small cadre of dedicated breeders has reintroducing them here. They must conform to the European standards and not have more than 1/8 Am Brit in their bloodline. They can also have black and white and black, orange, and white as colors. Am. Brits are limited to orange and white. and live and white.

The French Brittany is the smallest of the pointing breeds, and it was developed for the foot hunter. I have nine of the little rascals and they are all they are advertized to be. I also have two field line Golden Retrievers with outstanding bloodlines (Sungold and Top Brass) and they can't hold a candle to the Brits on upland birds. (The Goldens are pretty darned good in their own rights.)

If I couldn't get the Fr. Brits I would definitely go with the Am. Brits.

Google French Brittany to find the breeders. The good ones will interview you to see if you qualify for one of their pups. You may have to wait a while as most breed by reservation only. You will also find a lot of additional information about the breed.

You can have the pups flown to you for less than you'll probably spend on gas and from my experience it's easier on you and the dog if the drive to pick one up is more than a couple of hours.

I have 2 Britts. Wonderful house dogs, but neither points. Make sure you get a started bird dog, so you know it points and is not gun shy. Then let me know when you are ready to hunt and I'll come up from Florida and chase grouse with ya in Maine. I'll bring my German Shorthairs.

That would be SO cool. I've wanted to hunt grouse, or should I say partridge, in New England for years! That symbolizes the ultimate in classic upland hunting to me. I'd even bring my side-by-side! I can't hit crap with it, mind you, but I'd bring it.
