What kind or brand of dog food do you feed your hunting dogs?

What kind or brand of dog food do you feed your hunting dogs? I brought a bag of some expensive dog food: Nutra-Max and my 9 month old Beagle dosen't like it to much. I'm just getting some opinions on what kind of dog food that most people on this forum used, thanks.

Nutro Natural Choice for both dogs. Puppy gets the puppy food, adult gets the adult sort. I mix in Dynovite for both, and Evanger's canned food in various flavors (which is Kosher, by the way) and add a splash of hot water to mix it all up in a mush. They wolf it down pretty quickly. But then again, they are both labs. Labs wolf down almost anything.

My Beagle likes Save chunk style dog food. The Louisiana Catahula Lepord dog and the Jack Russell Terrier also like it.

down time 18-21% protein during non stress season

Diamond same

Don't let the 'hunter' get fat, stress on bones and joints is magnified exponentially = shortened hunting life

Running Dogs, fox, Coonhounds, Rabbit dogs, beagles, it is most tough when they are overweight.

Diamond is it for my 2 dogs. The green bag (hi-protein) both stay pretty fit....more than can be said for their owner!

Yeah, I have used Diamond High Proformance 20% Fat 30% Protein and my dogs liked it, I will might be going back to it. Walmart has got a new Maximum that has no by-products, no corn and no soy products. I might try it too.

I use Eukanuba Premium Performance. It is 30% protein and 20% fat. It is good food, but has gotten awfully expensive. I'm looking for something else right now. One problem that I have is being able to get food when I'm on the road field trialing. I switched last year to Canidae but got stuck in Texas and couldn't find it so I switched back.

9mmfan, I have an English Pointer, and belong to a bird dog club. Most of us feed any quality ration during the non-huntng times (I like Purina 1), and I supplement it with "Energy Pak" from Nat. Pet Products during the hunting season.
#1+ on not letting your dog get too fat!!

Umm In all my life I have never fed any hound/dog/mutt anything but purina dog chow and I hav enever had ever any health or vitality problems with any dog I have owned, now I do toss in table and cookin scraps from time to time but the basic menu is Purina and all the hounds have be long lived and happy.

Ditto on Purina products--When i had sled dogs in AK I bought it by the ton--We had to supplement with horse meat- liver- Grchix & lamb- salmon- whitefish- beaver-turkey skins etc but purina puppy and dog chow was number one-- except when a sponsor demanded we use their products-- worked some times not so good some and they were dumped.--Now I live in Wisc and have 2 BLM's-- they had puppy chow to about one 9 mos then Dog chow --in hunt season we do supplement with MEAT-- but would with any food.

I used Science Diet, IAMS and Eukanuba. I recently swithced to another brand of premium "wellness" venison and rice formula for my Lab's skin allergies. They get no table food, very few dog snacks but unlimited veggies like bannanas, apples, carrots, etc. .

One thing that you must consider - what goes in them comes out of them. Cheaper dog foods had my dogs, wel, smelling like dogs. You know the smell. Pet someone's dog and you know how your hand smells afterward. Better foods also make for fewer, more compact stools.

A friend of mine has a huge Labrador retriever. It eats a lot, and we went to the store to buy a large bag of dog food. We were in line to check out and a woman behind him asked if he had a dog.
The "what a moron!" look on my buddy's face was priceless, and I knew what it meant: he was going to toy with her. He told her that no, he was starting The Purina Diet again although he probably shouldn't -- he said he had ended up in the hospital last time, but that he'd lost 50 pounds before he awakened in intensive care with tubes coming out of most of his orifices and IVs in both arms.

He told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pants pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. He said that the food is nutritionally complete so he was going to try it again.

I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was by now enthralled with his story, particularly a big tall guy who was behind the woman.
Horrified, she asked why he ended up in the hospital -- had the Purina made him sick? He told her no; he'd been sitting in the middle of the street licking his balls and a car hit him.
The woman turned fire-engine red, and I helped the tall guy up off the floor.

That was great wunhunglow, one of the funnest things I have ever read on this forum.

Here is a picture of one of my Beagles, I'm now feeding them Diamond Proformance and and Maximum. All my dogs are doing great on it.
