7.62 Question

Can you use 7.62 X 39 in a 7.62 X 51 (.308) semi auto ?

im going to go with NO!!!!
im just guessing here but you shouldsouldonly shoot the type ofammo that the gun is ment for..... anything esle is probably not safe...hoply moose will come by toeather renforce this or tell me im full of it....but i think it most likly unsafe for your gun and you

Simple rule of thumb. If the gun doesn't say you can shoot it on the gun, don't do it. There is a reason that they stamp it into the barrel, receiver, etc.

I thought the only difference was the case length ? Kind of like shooting .38 out of a .357 .. aw well

Definitely Not!
The 7.62x39 bullet is actually a larger diameter than the 7.62x51; .311" against .308" and the case head is a slightly smaller diameter but that would probably not make any difference to chambering. You would experience excessive chamber pressures which would be extremely hazardous to your health.
So saying, you might actually get away with it a few times!!! just like firing 7.62x51 in a .30-06!! It will go & will fire, But I wouldn't do it!!

No both round headspace on the shoulder. using the shorter round in the longer chamber would result in excessive head space and cause the case to rupture this could damage the rifle and you. Using an insert may make the round fit better but you would still need to set your headspace. also because of difference in case head dia. you may have extraction problems as well as lack of case support.

There's also a pretty big difference in case/rim diameter. Remember these are bottle necked cartridges. The 7.62x39mm's rim diameter is 11.3mm. The 7.62x51mm's rim diameter is 11.94mm.

Not unless you want to see a case failure and what damage results. I have seen what happens to such guns its to be avoided.
