So...the rifle. yeah, I WANT IT! lol. That is 100% pure breed German 7.92X57 (8mm) Mauser. If it was a cologne, id wear it. A great piece of weaponry.

Hi ! I own an 8mm Mauser handed down from my grandfather (he was born in1886). Nobody knows where or when he got it. As for markings:GLOBE FIREARMS LTD CAL.8X57 JS MODEL 099 . On the bolt stem:2878 . On the safety latch: 78 . And on the right side of the rear sight seems to be a logo with 155 or whatever underneath-it is extremely small.It is in excellent condition.Surprising how smooth and accurate the Mauser is,I was hooked the first time I fired it.QUESTIONS:Where can I find information on this riffle-where and when was it made-what type of wood is the stock-what is it worth-what ammunition can and cannot be used,what JS means and so on... COOKER300 ,since my riffle looks so similar to yours any information you find would be appreciated. P.S. :To check the caliber the 325WSM (if you know someone)is an exact fit,both are 323.

I'm thinking the stock has been refinished. It's still a gorgeous rifle and a great memento.

Welcome to the Forum 2008.

I think that if you started a new thread with some pictures of the rifle, someone can help you indentify it. Any markings on top of the reciever or on the side will help determine the maker.

There are also some good Mauser links posted in this thread that might help you out.

it looks as if it has been sporterized, the pistol grip looks altered and the hand guard has been removed. the sling slot in the butt stock looks to have been filled. But hey, its still a 98, plus its been in the family and thats what truly counts. Just like my Hopkins & Allen 16Ga, my grandfathers, its a piece but i sill keep it.

That stock has been butchered beyond repair. In addition the handguard and both barrel bands are gone. Does the bayonet lug have the nr 12 on the right side as you look at if from the front? Probably is the original for the rifle so should match.
You will need a complete stock set - stock/butt plate, hand guard, both bbl bands and the lock bar that holds the 2 bbl bands in place. I doubt that you will find the whole set for less than $200, but you never know. You will Not get a correct 623 proofed stock set for less than $300+. A lot of people are looking for that maker and prices are high.

2008 all of the info that i have found out on my rifle has come from teh web sites that the guys have posted in here on the first page. they all have been more than helpful in my findings. and thanks for the info on the stock. but after long thought im going to keep it the way it is now.
