sa 1911a1 gi model wont feed,

i have a 1911a1, the gi model, one of several different 1911s i have,
this one somehow is difficult to feed,
i use wilson combat mags,
it will not seat the first round whetHer factory or handload.
i polished the feed ramp, polished the chamber, ground and polished the interior egde on the chamber. . added a full length guide rod, and i believe it has about a 14-16 pound spring in it.
it will now cycle after the first round fires, before i polished everything, a hit and miss issue.
could the extractor be so stiff that it will not allow the round to slip into the extractor groove?? .

Yup. I'd try adjusting the extractor. In addition, I'd polish the part of the extractor that contacts the case.

Hopefully too as it wears operation will be more reliable.The slide velocity will gets faster as some smoothing of the parts occurs. See; you can't cycle the first round as fast as the gun does, so that is part of the problem. The extractor too could be part of the problem. Just shoot the heck out of it and smooth the rails if you can.Full length guides can be a problem of their own.

You might try a more powerful recoil spring. If your using 18# try a 22#.

I have the same issue with my S.A.M-G.I..... I just have not got a time to mess with it, but I will.

My SA GI does the same exact thing. I sent it back for warranty work and it still does the same crap. I havent' bothered to send it back yet.

Mine often fails to go into battery on the first and last rds of the magazine. I've used several different mags with no change.

What's the feed ramp look like? I mean if you're having the same issue/s with any mag you use, and none have helped, what's the next thing to check? The feed ramp? I'm seriously asking, I honestly don't know, but would think that would be what to check next, logically speaking that is. No, not related to Spock. lol

Mitch has the probable answer. I had an SA stainless same problem. After that was resolved I was having ejection problems turned out from my sources the extractor channel was undersized and Springfield new it an just wanted me tosend the gun in. Took it to a local machine shop and reamed it out, hasn't burped yet

I can't believe that you actually shoot your Springfields. Mine is used and I paid $2k for it. Replacement parts are not exactly easy to get either.

i finally fixed the issue, extractor was the issue. went to range. shot a few , worked on extractor, shot more etc. now after i polished everything i could, bent, pulled and pried, this one will chamber, fire and eject any i feed it, factory, handloads and cheap factory.
it was trial and error on that .

i took my extractor out and bent it with my fingers wearing gloves (that lil thing hurt my fingers)
that was many many rounds ago and it always works now.

Joe bring it out next time you come, and we will try it out at the range. I had an extractor problem with my 45 but I had to replace it. I also just replaced one on my S&W 52 38 spec. lucky I found one to replace it with.

There is no such thing as a WWII Springfield. Springfield Armory was never one of the contractors who made the 1911 in WWII. It was only Colt, Ithaca, Remington Rand, US&S & Singer. H&R also had a contract that was never fulfilled.

SA (MA) did indeed manufacture the 1911 during WWI. Here is mine;

My SA GI never had any such problem....but I did get it in stainless steel. Wonder if that made any difference?
