| Senior Member | .308 or 7.62X51mm Hello, I own an AR-15 but am looking to buy a long range bolt action rifle, in a larger caliber than .223, like a .308 or .30cal, something like that. I dont need an 800.00 rifle, I wouldnt wanna spend more than around 500. Pretty new to bolt actions, but want to get into presicion shooting. Any ideas? Personal favorites or reccomendations? Thanks. |

| Senior Member | hmm that savage is enticing...but i want to put away a rifle including scope + rings for 500 or under. If i had my choice i'd take the remington 700 but those run in the 7 and 800's... |

Having said that, the rifle is just a wall hanger with out a top quality scope. Many people spend far more on the scope than on the rifle. My Savage cost about $400.00 in 2002. I put $450.00 in a Leupold scope, $80.00 in a Harris bipod, $80.00 in a Timney trigger, and a bit more in bedding, mounts, scope caps, sling, and cheek piece. I've spent hundreds more on ammo. I don't want to dissuade you, I just suggesting that you may not be ready for a long range target rifle. Why not get a .308 and learn to shoot it well out to 300 yards, gain experience in ranging and wind, and then upgrade. I think it's a crawl before you walk issue. You can get a really nice 300 yard rifle with an adequate scope for $500 or so.

| Senior Member | ...I never said I was shooting at 500+ yards...300 yards is plenty for me, your right the scope ends up being the real investment but I'm not shooting anymore than 350yds. That being said, do you have a good entry level rifle in mind? preferably .308 |

| Senior Member | 300 yards is longer than i am shooting currently, sorry for the misconception there. with My 16in AR15 with stock irons i can shoot about 150yds decently. I dunno if thats terrible, havent tried farther but you cant see much past that without a scope. I'm just looking for a .30cal bolt action, surely I dont need to buy a used rifle to stay under 500.00? |

But wait! You already have a nice rifle easily capable of 300 yard shots! I know little about the AR but I think you can get a heavy barrel upper and make that thing a 400 yard tack driver. I know nothing of these people but it is an example of an option. AR Upper with heavy barrel for $395.00. Del-Ton, Inc. AR-15 20" Custom Upper and here: 24 Tactical - 5.56mm (shown with optional 4-rail handguard) [uh24tact5.56] - $445.00 : Ranger Sales LLC, Your Source for Military AR-15 Spec Rifle Parts and Kits!

| Senior Member | My AR-15 I am setting up in a tactical set up. I already have my eotech on the way, I don't want a heavy barrel on it. I use it for shooting while moving, standing, sometimes kneeling. I'm looking for a bolt action for a different purpose; prone shooting. Yes, i can prone shoot my ar15 and shoot good groupings at 300 yards, but I am looking to buy a bolt action to do that with. Perhaps i should look into a milsurp rifle like a mauser or enfield...the only problem with the Kar98's is the 8mm ammo is horrendously expensive ![]() |

Trader Rating: (0) | $230 for that mueller scope +$30 rings +$30 bases thats a cheap scope that still is quality that doesnt leave much for a new rifle.
