The factory bolt release is really screwy. You have to push the right tabs in the right sequence. Most people replace them with an inexpensive, aftermarket part that works much better.

About 30 seconds with a dremel tool and the stock part works great, do a search over at rimfirecentral.com.

The stock bolt release is really bogus. You can either change the slot profile of the release with a dremel or buy an after market one that works right. However, I found the one I bought a few years needed a bit of refinement. Now, it's fine.
Would also suggest the aftermarket mag release with a tang for easier release. And to top off the changes, install the target hammer/sear combo. Costs about $60-70 (much less than a complete Volquartson trigger group), but is well worth it in trigger pull, creap, & the feeling of having a custom trigger. You can also install an allen screw in the back of the trigger guard to control trigger over travel. Just set it to 'let off plus a tad more' to avoid any shear condition between sear & hammer.

It works as it's designed to. But yeah, I know what y'all mean. It can be annoying if you don't know how it's supposed to work. I've been thinking about the aftermarket replacement that releases when you pull the bolt back. I do have a quick mag release and it works very well after modification. I bought a polymer one and it didn't quite work properly so I had to fix it up a bit.
