Muzzleloader for Cape Buffalo

Now I don't think I would do this without some other big rifle with me for backup but, Jim Shockey did it. Really my question is, what is the biggest thing you would use a Muzzleloader for?

anything. (with a couple of buddys packing 375, 416 etc.) Powerbelt makes some steel tipped bullets specifically for the big 5.

I really like muzzleloader hunting and maybe someday I'll make it to Africa and do it but, like we both said, I'd want to have something else with me just in case. Plus 1 thing is when in Africa you'll always have a guide with a big gun.

Here is a sight to check out, to answer your question, i am pretty sure this muzzleloader will kill anything that walks the earth.

Muzzleloader - Best Muzzleloader - Custom Muzzleloader: Ultimate Firearms Inc.

Let me know what you think, I am debating on getting one myself.

Muzzleloaders are cool, but if I make it to Africa, maybe in the next few years, I don`t think think one would even be a consideration for me. I think that it would be something more of a stunt than a traditional safari for a first timer like me. While back-up would nice, I think I would feel much more satisfied to know that it is more of a formality than a necessity. For a cape buffalo hunt I would almost without a doubt choose .416 Rigby. If I go and can take 3 guns. it`s .416 rigby,.300 wea. and an o/u shotgun.

Long before there were center fire firearms there were muzzle loaders. I am sure they killed everything that walked earth with them then so I see no reason a muzzleloader wouldnt do it now.

To answer your question directly. With the required practice and opportunity... anything. Same goes for my .30-06.

I have hunted our water buffalo - they are every bit as big, tough and mean as cape buffalo - personally i would not like to be caught in a tight spot with only a muzzle loader. But then again there is a whole bunch of big testicled blokes over here who shoot water buffalo with a bow, so i guess it would be possible.

Well I guess it is a muzzle loader (technically) certainly not what I think of or shoot as a muzzleloader.

Better sharpen the muzzle, it'll be a spear real quick.

Thats what i mean, bugger that shot up and it's game over. The buff would have you. I know of heart shot buffalo that have smashed up a Landcruiser (wrote it off too) trampled people, gored people ect all after perfect shots. And if you have an empty rifle there is not a thing you can do to stop him. Just that little bit of meat in between his horns is over an inch and a half thick, it amazed me.

An interesting fact i learned over the weekend. Cape buffalo are actually smaller than our water buffalo. For some reason i was always of the opinion that cape buffalo were bigger but infact i was wrong.

I will never get to hunt your water buffalo but I read about them every chance I get I envy you for being able to hunt them.Every story I read about them, the hunters have a healthy respect for them, even after they are down. sam.

Hunting in Africa can be real fun, have a look at this link and see how confident you would be with a muzzle-loader and one back-up???

That was a great example of doing everything WRONG ! The hunter should never had shot when he did, and then when that lion sat back up after the intial shot they should have IMMMEDIATLY put more rounds into it. Very poorly done .

See and I said a Muzzle loader would be enough. Well I changed my vote. Belt fed .375 I will stick to white tails.

When i shot mine last year Sam, his legs folded up and he fell where he stood. But i still walked in there with a round in the chamber and when i got to 20 or so yards i gave him 5 minuets just to be sure. I have heard of people walking in to have a look at their buffalo only to have that "dead" buffalo jump up and charge them.

If a buffalo see's you coming in long grass (or thick timber) before you see him, he will drop his head low and go out in a wide circle around you and charge from behind.

The property i hunt on, when they are out fencing they will only work within arms reach of the vehicle then when they cant reach the vehicle anymore they get in and move it closer. A few times they were out fixing a hole in the fence and wandered too far from the vehicle with their head down paying attention to what they were doing and when they looked up they had a buffalo between them and the vehicle.

But the animal to realy take notice of is a scrub bull, they have a temper 3 times worse than any buffalo and although they are not as thick and tough they can grow alot bigger.
