Question about M39 bolt

Just wanted to get the group to weigh in on this one.

I cleaned up my M39 Sako. Noticed that the bolt was a little rougher than before I started cleaning. Took the bolt apart. Cleaned it well with mineral spirits. Lubed it lightly, and reassembled. Still rough. Took the rifle apart. cleaned the entire action with gun scrubber followed by WD40 and hoppe's. Then hand buffed the bolt parts with a green scotch brite pad. The issue is better but the bolt will close just fine. And with out lowering the striker it will open relatively easily. If I lower the striker however the bolt will open to the point to where the cocking mechanism is about to lock back and then it gets really hard to open. I checked to see if the firing pin was bent and it looked OK but I am not a gunsmith nor do I play one on TV. It seems to me that there is a burr or something right at that point of the lock. Will post pics of the bolt when I get off work. The bolt does look like it has been through a war. But it does match the receiver. The rest of the rifle looks great!

Any Ideas?

Did the bolt get tweaked at all?

Not to my knowledge. Comes apart easily. Goes back together nicely. Like I said. The out side does look like a WW2 combat bolt but as tough as those things are they look solid. The only thing I can think of is that maybe there is soemthing in the firing pin channel . I blew that out with gun scrubber and still nothing. Hmmm.

Try polishing and lubing the cocking cam area of the bolt and cocking piece.

Question...Whenyou re-assembled the bolt did you use the guage on the screwdriver and set the firing pin protrusion properly ???

EDIT: Also check the bolt guide/connecting bar.

Rich, I think that may be one of the issues. I used the gauge and even with it all the way tight the pin is still too high.

Steve, I checked the bolt guide connector bar and it looks OK. The receiver feels smooth to the touch. I am thinking about seeing if one of my other bolts will close and see if it is the bolt of something else.

Well you could mail it to me for inspection and repair, I would do it free of charge , just cover the postage...

Just need the bolt...I have lots of parts if necessary, and I can use one of my m39's to test fit...I'm more concerned about your firing pin protrusion...
It needs to be within specs.

I think if it is still to high You have a problem I think like mooseman I would be checking that!!something isnt right! send it to mooseman you wont get a better deal than Free LOL

keep us posted Tex I never seen a firing pin in a mosin that couldnt be adusted unless it had cosmo in it
possible the firing pin is bent tho !!
Take it out and rol it on a flat surface is it wobbles its bent

I can't see a bent firing pin working and then all of a sudden not working after cleaning. There is a very simple test to eliminate a bent or binding pin-with the pin in the fired position, pull back on the cocking knob and see if you can cock it by hand. If you can, the prob. lies somewhere else.

Yep, can cock it by hand. Even tried one of the other firing pins from my other Mosins. Still doesn't come into spec. I am in contact with a gunsmith and will have him take a look see. I did find something interesting though. I took apart my Hungarian mosin bolt and compared the firing pin from the M44 Hungarian and the Finn. The M44 has a slightly smaller collar and threads that are different. Over all length is slightly shorter than the finn firing pin. Tried the M44 pin and it didn't come with in spec either. So, I think it is time for an expert.

Will let you all know what I find out.

I still think the problem lies in the final "step" of the cocking cam. If you look at the underside of the bolt, you'll see an angled portion of the bolt and a corresponding angle on the cocking piece. If you work the bolt by hand, you'll see that there's a small flat spot about 1\16"-1\8" that the cocking piece rests upon when the handle is raised. There is a lot of pressure on this cocking cam and any little burr in this area will cause it to hang up. It's been my experience that a buildup of cosmoline in this area actually smooths the cocking action and when removed, can make it bind.
