Cleaning the MAGS

Hello,

I just purchased a new PT145 and put 150 rounds through it. The manual says I should clean the mags at 200 rounds! I have owned a few automatics and never cleaned the mags (and no malfunctions!) Is this just wih Taurus firearms???

It could very well a liability issue. Just a little something to protect them frim litigation.

I doubt you'll have any issues.

I clean them (PT-145) after each shooting session; not too hard to do. I extract some powder and crud when I do so, and very lightly coat the springs with break-free. It may well be that you don't ever need to--never cleaned my Glock mags. But the ones on the Taurus were fairly easy to open and I figured "why not"

I clean and lube all my mags every 300-400 rounds on all my semis.

Mags do collect crap, can can usually be broken down for cleaning. However, every 400 rounds seems excessive, more so 200. I will clean Mags when they start having problems (old oil inside gets sticky or something), but generally they should not need a whole lot of maintenance.

Need being the key word there, it is never a bad idea to take care of your tools. but again, 200 rounds? Thats a warmup on Saturday morning, not a marathon shooting spree...

Cleaning them every year or two is plenty, if only to put a thin coat of oil on the springs and wipe them down to protect them from rusting. A bit of powder smudge can develop around the top inside with a lot of use.
