Barnes X vs HPBT.

Would someone be able to clarify for me the difference between a barnes hollow point and say a Sierra or Hornady HPBT. I have seen the barnes bullets knock whitetail off their butt, was just wondering if a hpbt would have the same effect?.. Thanks,

I'm not so sure about the Hornady, but I think the only HPBT bullets that Sierra makes are the match bullets. They are not intended for hunting, and I think they would be illegal for hunting in Canada. The hollow part really is for improving the ballistic coeficient, and not control expansion.

Hornady may make a hollow point BT for hunting. I think the hollow point really is more of a sell to the hunter than real. They probaby have a purpose in 22 rimfire bullets, where the velocity is so low that it is hard to get expansion. However in rifle bullets the real problem is more in controlling the expansion, and retaining a significant part of the original weight. This is better done with the Nosler Partition design, or controlling the thickness of the jacket from the front to back. Barnes obviously makes some fancy and I suspect very expensive bullets using copper and tungsten. Interesting ideas.

Oh yes they are more expensive. I like to reload about every different combination of weights and bullet configurations I can find until one just clicks with one of my rifles. Like recently I found that for some reason my old enfield 308 loves 110gr Spire point speers. Will I hunt with them, depends on what the test tube I ordered from cabelas shows. I have tried everything from Nosler BT's, core loks, accubonds, sst's, psp, spbt. Have never tried HPBT and when I was looking at prices the Sierras are 19.99 for 100 and the barnes are $42

Sierra make HPBT's in Game King aswell as Match. I use 165gr Sierra game King HPBT in my .30-06 i have shot some very big pigs with them with great results.

Yep they do make match and hunting grade HPBT.The matchkings dont expand well.I have also used sierra hpbt in my 300wm.They make insides mush

Sierra and others make fine accurate hpbt bullets. They have won and continue to win in shooting matches. They are made of lead and copper variant. On contact they explode leaving a devasting wound channel. Where does the lead go - into the meat.

Barnes X, TSX are hpbt solid brass/copper variant, especially heat treated to hold together. Barnes bullets rely on hydrostatic shock with complete thru penetration most of the time.
The cost of the bullet is your smallest cost per item in a hunt. Normally you would shoot one time and expect the bullet to get your game.

I will continue to use Barnes X and TSX whenever I hunt. You can count on the performance. I pay premium for a reason.

Pretty well covered this issue,except I would advise checking with the bullet mfg to see what rifling twist they reccomend. sam.
