questions about an m1

Hello everyone, i have a couple of questions about my m1 and im hoping for some help. I recently came across an m1 from my father who got it from his father who served in wwII. This gun is in excellent shape and seems to be all original. It still has the original oil and cleaning kit in it. It is an h&r arms with serial #4664387 the barrel says hra d6535448 10-52. can anyone tell me anything about this rifle, including an estimate, although it will not be sold since it was my grandfathers but i dont know if he used this one in service or not. what is the best ammo to shoot out of this rifle? i know nothing about m1's only about my m4. Thanks

Obviously if your grandfather was in WW2 and not in the Korean war, then he could not have used that rifle. The receiver being made 52-53. The value depends on whether or not the rifle has any non HR parts. It shouldn't, but without an inspection, that part remains in question. If it is in 'excellent' shape, and if it is al H&R, value could be near $1000.You should only use military m2 ball, or reloads that use 4895 powder or similar speed, and a bullet weight of 147 to 173 grain. If it is not all H&R value would drop by several hundred dollars.

If it is unaltered from its 50's birth it is fairy valuable. IF, too, grandad could document his use of this garand in Korea, and provide other associated photos and doc's it is really valuable!

If its unaltered from its 50's birth and perfect condition its worth $1000.00 tops. I doubt your Grandfather used it in service unless he found a way to smuggle it home. Not unheard of in WWII but not normal and really unusual for Korean War Era. More than likely he purchased it from DCM or CMP or elsewhere here in the states

Thanks guys for all the help, and for welcoming me into g&g. I wish i could ask my grandfather more about the history of this rifle but he passed on 5yrs ago. I talked to my father about this and he said he dont know much since my gramps was not much for words just action. He said my grandfather served from 1941 till the 60's and saw action on the frontlines in wwII and was in korea but saw limited combat there. He knows he had this rifle since the 50's cause my father learned to shoot it when he was 10 in 1959. It has been stored at grampas house and then my fathers until recently when he gave it to me. i cant wait till my ammo arrives so i can take this baby to the range. Thanks for the help guys.

About a year ago, the CMP was selling "collector grade" H+R Garands of Korean war vintage for $1400.00 Of course, these were in very fine condition with all matching components.

Jeremyb,
If you are the third generation within your family to own the old war-horse then it is priceless; an absolute heirloom. I would guess Gramps got it from the old DCM. I think we all would like to see photos.
