| Member | Problem with five round clips, Help! Gidday you jokers. I'm bowing down to your superior knowledge on the M1. I have just experienced a problem with one of my M1's in that on the secound or third round fired the clip (5 Rnd) is ejected from the mag well. This is quite problematic in the middle of a rapid fire competition. I am guesssing it's a timing issue but don't quite understand "Timing" or how to rectify the problem. It may also be a clip latch issue although the latch seems to be in good order and it doesn't seem to happen on standard 8rnd clips. Is this just a5rnd clip thing? Your help would be welcomed as in my country I probably am one of the leading figures in the Garand world so no one to ask for help. Cheers. |

| Senior Member | 5 Round Clips With the standard eight-round clips, your problem (premature ejection) can often be traced to the clip latch spring. I had an M1 that gave me fits with that; replaced all kinds of parts, and no dice. Replaced the spring...done! Not saying the spring is the cause, but it might be. In any case, I'd suspect that parts are difficult to obtain? If you need to order from an overseas (from your standpoint) supplier, the spring is probably the least expensive option. Hope this helps. | Senior Member | My guess would be that the clip is slightly out of spec, can you borrow another 5 shot clip and see if it happens.Usually 'timing' problems occur on the seventh round, where-in the height of the follower more or less trips the clip latch to release prematurely. I don't see that to be the case in your situation.I have 3 Garands and have owned maybe 6 total, and never had a latch problem in any of them. So my solution is educated guess. I believe as the follower moves up, there comes a point in which the latch is pulled back far enough to lose it's hold on the clip and thus it flies out.Somehow your release is occuring sooner. Two possibilities...1: is which the latch is a little rounded and thus slipping from it's hold on the clip. Because that it is not occuring on the 8 rd clips, makes me believe the (2) clip is out of spec in the area that the latch engages.Chech the latch to see maybe that it is not warn, and stretch the clip latch spring a little.I think it is the clip with a small possibility of a slightly worn latch and weak latch spring. |

| Senior Member | Does it happen w 8 round clip? "Premature ejection" of clip with live rounds usually has a pattern. It can be the clip latch or spring. But it can be a "bunch" of other parts that affect the grasp of the clip latch on the clip. You can usually see if there is excess wear on the indicated parts. The clip latch & spring, op rod catch, bullet guide, follower and arm, can also cause it. |

| Senior Member | 99 percent of the time its the clip latch spring. Remove it , stretch it , reassemble and see if that fixes it. If so order a new one. If thats not it next thing I would check is the clip latch itself, the end can wear. I have had three Garands that did the same thing (although it was with 8rd enblocs), it was the spring. Now all this said you say it doesn't "seem" to happen with 8 rd enblocs which very well may mean its your 5rd enbloc, try a different one. Springs are a cheap item and anymore I just replace them all before I start having any problems Last edited by Orlando; 03-09-2008 at 10:44 AM. |

| Senior Member | I shoot with the 5 rnd clips almost all the time and have never had any problems with them! I just did put 5 rnd's in them and let them sit there for 2 weeks because of the "tight" fit. After that -> no problems! Rob
